Braces for adults

Anybody know much about braces for adults?

I've been thinking about getting braces on and off for years but can't seem to find much up to date info.

I was supposed to get them when I was 12 through the HSE clinic dentist that used to come to the national school. I am now 26 and still waiting to hear from them...

Just wondering if anybody knows how much they would cost and if PRSI or tax gives any relief on it. Last time I was at the dentist I asked about it & he referred me to an orthodontist but didn't go as they wanted 200 euro for a consultation!

Hi.. ive just been to the dentist in the last week.
Im 23 and need braces on my top teeth, my bottom ones are fine.
I done some research and found out that theres a new brace system out which is invisable and is quicker! I went to my dentist in Ashbourne who does the 'invisalign' braces and he estimated that it would be arounf 2500 for the clear braces and it would only take 9 months. I think that is great! Google <snip>in County meath..(which is only 20 mins from town) Theyre consultation is also free and they will tell u exactly what u can get! Hope this helps you as i know how u feel :)

If anyone knows of anywhere cheaper could you pm me? I heard the north is cheaper ?
    Please read the forum charter.

Around the four grand mark - got both sets done. Look up north. Even with the exchange rate, the price is still good.

Dont confuse limited objective orthodontics like 6 month smile, invasalign, clearstep with full course orthodontics. The prior are designed to correct front teeth only and are a bit more unstable afterwards, full course corrects the back teeth and bite and is more stable long term and give a better result with finer control. Their two different things and should not be directly compared.

Again http://www.orthodontics.ie/ is a good resource

The invisalign corrects bite and the whole mouth of teeth not just the front. If you go to an orthodontist they will tell you that. It is advancement in dentistry. Myself being an adult, would much prefer a clear braces so i could go to meetings or such things without being embarrassed of a mouth full of metal. Obviously it depends on the severity of your teeth but mine are pretty bad. My dentist told me traintracks would be 4000 and would take a year and a half and that invisalign would be 2500 and would take 9 months. Same results only quicker. Sounds like the winner to me! :)

I also have a friend who got invisalign and a friend who has traintracks..the one with traintracks still has hers on after a year and a half while the other has hers off already and her smile is amazing!

Cant wait to get mine! :D

jajaD Invasalign does not give you the same result in any way, I am not an orthodontist but I have been a dentist for a while. You don't have the control over tooth position and root torque with invasalign. In fact the invasalign is manufactured by some chap in a lab who has never seen you, the dentist that hands you the retainers has no control whatsoever over the tooth position, only the amount of stripping (welcome to flat contact country).

Invasalign cannot correct many bite problems, it cannot extrude teeth properly. Having said that it does work if your objectives for treatment are limited (as most adult orthodontics is) its just their is no point comparing it to a 2 years course of braces in expense or result.

As for an advancement in dentistry, its an increase in speed and convenience and a marvel in marketing. If you want real speed ask about 3 months smiles thats even faster http://www.3monthbraces.com/ and must therefore be better and more advanced ;) Maybe your dentist could go on that course, I am sure it take only a few hours, the training courses are getting shorter too.

    Orthoman.....go to bed

Well... dont you just hate being corrected ;)
The info i got is from the internet and my denist sorry ORTHODONTIST *tut*
For me personally, clear braces are the only option for me as I am a 24 year old woman who def would never get a mouth full of metal! Id find that more embarrassing than my imperfect teeth. And I work face to face with customers so if the option is there for me to correct two crooked teeth with invisalign then Yay...im happy! :)

I am a dentist who works face to face with patients every day and I have full fixed braces.

    hi Salow

Adults can have orthodontic treatment same as a child. however it may take a little longer and some treatments are more complicated than with a gowing patient. You have many options when it comes to the type of braces: standard metal ones, ceramic ones, invisible ones for simple cases or lingual braces on the inside of your teeth.

Ask your dentist to recommend someone or look up www.orthodontics.ie

    JajaD:
I hope your treatment is going well. You mentioned that you are reluctant to have metal braces and that is understandable. There are many alternatives as you have discovered. If you have 2 crooked teeth then it is usually no problem to straighten them and any kind of a brace will work.

I would only advise Invisalign for mild cases, eg 2 crooked teeth, not more difficult ones. You need to be careful accepting info on the internet as gospel. Short treatment i.e. 6-9 months means a compromise result or a very simple case. Although you might not like having the braces on for long if you want the best outcome there is usually no other option. An orthodontist is best placed to advised you on all the treatment options but any dentist can treat a straightforward case. check out www.orthodontics.ie for a list of specialists.

Specialist prices in the South are now comparable to the North

But being humans, as you should know, we are all different and have different needs and wants, so as i said before, in MY opinion and for ME, invisalign is what i have chosen. Braces are really ugly and ive heard from so many people also that it hurts the mouth also.

Anyway, im not here for a debate, Ive better things to be doing than discussing teeth... im only here to advise the poster on an option that he may not have known about.. :P

Thats what i hate about boards, u cant just give someone a suggestion.

    Toodles! :)
