a very cheap option is to just learn yourself.

most languages are covered so well online through various tutorials and forums that it's easy for learners to get started. in my case i started to learn java online myself, i started with the sun java tutorials and then started to write applications to work out the various maths problems that appear on my college course.

the biggest thing is to get your head around an ide (interactive development environment) if you've not used one before. if you're interested in java you can contact me directly and i'll give you some pointers on how to get started.
