Car hire without a credit card

    Hi,

Hoping someone can help, I have a friend coming over to Ireland from the UK and they need to hire a car when they arrive in Ireland. From what I can see no car rental company will hire a car without a credit card. My friend only has a debit card. Is there anyway out of this? If I was to book online with my credit card would that do or does he need to present it at the desk?

    Any help much appreciated! :)

    Thanks

    Jessie

In my experience, the credit card used to make the booking will have to be presented when collecting the car.

Plus, the credit card will be used to cover any damage incurred or extra charges such as speeding tickets and tolls. You'd be placing an awful lot of trust in your friend.

    Hi Jessie
The hire company will need a cc alright no way around it really. One option is to use your credit card as security on the car but you would need to be there with them when they pick the car up. You will need to sign for it etc.
They can book with a diff cc to the one you present at the desk once the owner of the cc is there to sign for it. I worked in car hire for few years so this was they way with us and this was for one of the biggest companies. Hope this helps. One way to protect yourself also would be to ensure your friend takes out the full cover so that the insurance excess is 0 that way if any accidents your cc is safe. Wont help with speeding fines or tolls but excess would be biggest problem if they had to charge ya. Gav

    Hi,

Have a kinda similar problem - need to book car hire at dublin airport for my parents - my father is the driver but he doesnt have a cc in his name - my mother will be there and can book it on her cc. do you think that will work?

I know i could book it in my mothers name and add on my father as a driver but that could cost abt an extra 10-15euro a day?

Been down this road before. The car-rental companies want the credit card with the principal user the same as the renter of the car. Son's or friends' credit cards not acceptable.

For previous valued customers they tend to take a cash deposit of €300, but I understand this is on way out also, if not already gone.

Hi As Leper said you would have to put your mother as main driver as its her cc and then have your father added as second driver. This is prob the only way around it. I guess they want to cc of the driver so that if any damage its there card there charging etc not some 3rd party.
