Hi! My friend is currently trying to connect to his netopia router while using ubuntu 7.10

It's showing the wireless connection thing in the top of the screen and when he enters in the name of the router and the password it'll load for a minute then ask for a password again, and it's just doing this over and over again.

Sorry if I'm not clear enough, but all replies welcome!

    Hi.
Not an immediate fix, but this is important.

Ubuntu 7.10 can be read as 2007-10, so it's nearly three years out of date.
Download and upgrade to 10.04 (April 2010) if at all possible.
It supports far more wireless hardware, and particularly in wireless networking will make your lives much easier. If any hardware in the computer is newer than 2007,
it more than likely won't work properly.

All the same, it's essential to let us know what type of computer he's using.
The model of the PC or laptop, and the model of the wifi card in it need to be known
before anyone can give you useful advice.

Your friend shouldn't have to enter the name of the router. It sounds like he's using the new wireless network option which is used to create an Ad-Hoc network rather than to connect to a router. If the wireless was working correctly, clicking on the icon should list all the wireless networks within range.

One other thing is that if it's asking for a password, it's probably his own password rather than the wireless key. This is needed to set up a wireless connection the first time.
I'd hate you to get disheartened and feel that that was what linux is capable of.
It was the case, but that's a long time ago.
Good luck, linux and wireless were hard work in 2007!

I have Ubuntu 10.04 on my lappy. My mate has that router and when I was in his house the other day it connected fine.

Thanks for the replies but we just gave up and installed windows :P

It's an old version of linux because it was the only OS I had in my house :)

Hi, I've a Dell Dimension 5150 that I've been trying to connect to the wireless home network with ubuntu 10.04. The wireless adapter is the bog-standard one shipped out with Eircom broadband - a Netopia TER/GUSB-E.

I can detect the wireless networks in range, I supply the WPA key, but after a minute or so of trying to connect, it just fails to connect.

This is odd because I had ubuntu 9.04 and wireless worked fine on the same hardware!

    syslog says:
    DHCPDISCOVER on wlan0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67 interval 11

    ...

<info> (wlan0): DHCP transaction took too long, stopping it.
    <info> Activation (wlan0) Stage 4 of 5 (IP4 Configure Timeout) scheduled..
    <info> Activation (wlan0) Stage 4 of 5 (IP4 Configure Timeout) started..
    <info> Activation (wlan0): device state change: 7-> 9 (reason 5)
    <info> Activation (wlan0) failed for access point (eircom1234 4567)

Thats all a bit cryptic to me... :(

I thing there may be some compatability issues with Netopia routers and IPv6 (on some linux distros).

You could try disable IPv6 and see if that helps

    IPv6 set to ignore.

    Still no joy.

It doesn't seem like a driver issue either because its picking up the networks. It just won't connect :(

Maybe you should do a bit of digging around.... that log, is not enough for us to be able to pinpoint.... there's two things that comes to mind:
either the wireless lan card is flaky or an incorrect option supplied (maybe it's refusing to connect with WPA Key...) use 'dmesg | less' to find out if the kernel indeed has loaded the driver for the wireless card....
check for a latest version somewhere... the other option is to check the firmware of the netopia router and see if you can find a firmware upgrade...
