Bailing a little early on a j1

Long story short I want to end my j1 a little earlier than planned (just by a few days to make it back home for an unexpected but important occasion).

The travel company 'can't find' any flights on the day or two I could travel that aren't extraordinarily expensive, so can I just book a one way flight myself and take that home, leaving the immigration card and whatnot with American Immigration when I leave? I have no intention to return to America during the visa period.

Any help on the question is greatly appreciated

You've already paid for your return flights, right? It's a simple matter of changing your flights. How can a one way ticket be cheaper than this? You can go directly to your airline and see what they will charge for the flight change.

I can get a one flight cheaper (and at a slightly more convenient time) than the total fee being quoted by the travel company - the 'change fee' which is charged by the travel company themselves plus the supposed difference in prices between the flight I had booked and the new flight.

Hi. Ring the airline direct and see if they can come up with a better price than the travel company.
It is possible that there simply isn't a cheap flight available with your airline on the date you require.

It doesn't matter which airline you come back with. The check-in/gate agent will take the card. You're not limited to flying back with whoever you flew in on.
