    hi

i went for an interview on monday after bewing months out of work and i felt it went really well and afterwards the interviewer said we will be in touch later today and asked me for refferences, ive heard nothing back and i had my hopes up that i had got it after it went well, so i thought. anyway, they still havent called so would it look desperate if i sent her an email looking for feedback or should i just take it as i didnt get it, im just feeling really low about not having any work and ive sent out over 200 cv's

Maybe give it a week, so ring on Monday.

HR / hiring people don't seem to realise that a slight delay on their side often feels much longer to the candidate.

No harm sending an email about a week after to thank them for the interview and to look for feedback. Shows you are interested and want the job

ive just been overthinking wondering if i got a bad reference if she called the peoples names i gave her and i cant think of a good reason as to why id get a bad reference and she didnt call when she said she would, i got my hopes up after feeling so low for ages, its all my fault, i shouldnt have got them high in the first place! sorry for the rant, im sure theres alot more people in worse of situations than me

You shouldn't give reference details until you're offered a job pending references.

If you did give them the reference details, then I presume you rang each referee to let them know to expect a call? You don't want a referee getting a call out of the blue that they're not expecting.

i didnt know that and i havent called them, can they call them without offering me the job?? woops!

If they're listed on your CV, then it's quite possible that they might call them. I would consider it poor form, but that's not to say they won't do it.

For future reference (no pun intended), just put "references available upon request" at the bottom of your CV. I do not give any details until I get an offer.

i just emailed the two people i gave as refferences to ask if it was ok, im bricking it now but then again if the company is going to be sneaky and go behind my back then id rather not work for someone like that

They didn't go behind your back. They asked for references and you supplied them with same...

Hope it works out for you.

I'd wait till Monday as well and then call. I've sent loads of CV's and never heard anything at all but have never had an interview without the employer calling or at least sending a letter to say yay or nay. They may well have had to do more decision making when they'd seen everyone than they thought. Also one of my referees takes some time to come up with the goods as she's running a busy business and will usually forward a reference a day or two after being asked for it especially if I haven't had much time to notify her.

Did you not even tell them you wanted to use them as referees beforehand?

Hmm I'm confused....I never knew you should notify your referees beforehand. I just put my references on my cv and the employer rings them.

OP I've been to a few interviews this Summer where the interviewer said they would ring me later during the week and they never got back to me. I'd take it that you didnt get the job. :(

You can't list someone as a referee if they don't even know they might be called to give a reference!

There's a few reasons why you don't put the referees' details on your CV

    1) It's none of their business until they make an offer, pending a reference check - if you send your CV into a load of jobs, do you really want your references to be checked out before you even get an interview, let alone an offer? Do your referees want to get loads of unsolicited calls?

    2) You don't want your referee to be caught off guard - they should be expecting a call

    3) Ideally, your referee should know what job you've been offered. I tailor my CV for each different job application, emphasising different things depending on the job I'm applying for. So if it comes to a job offer, then I want my referee to know the things that I emphasised.

Would a potential employer ever contact your referees/ do back ground checks before they offer you the position?

They shouldn't, but if they're listed on your CV then you're sort of giving implicit permission to contact them. Courtesy would dictate that they should ask you first, but it's just easier to not list them in the first place.

    update

no word from interview so emailed them to say thanks and if i could have some feedback but in the meantime got a chatty email back from one of the references i provided the company saying they were already called for a reference last week by said company, weird isnt it or maybe they are just really slow getting back to people??
