EW has confirmed that the MPAA has changed the gritty indie’s dreaded NC-17 rating to a much-friendlier R after Harvey Weinstein himself appeared at today’s appeal hearing..................................

I can't wait for this! Exactly my type of film. Might go see it alone to minimise distractions! :P

Saw this yesterday, and was pretty impressed if not to the same degree some hyperbolic reviewers have been. It's a film that is made infinitely better by the powerhouse performances of the two leads. Ryan Gosling is fantastic as a nice if naive husband. Michelle Williams again proves herself as one of the most hypnotic actresses currently working in America - after this and Wendy & Lucy, I am almost at the point where I'd go to see a film based on her presence alone. The two ooze chemistry - whether it is the joy of first love or the silent aggression of that love fading.

Content wise, it's an intense and unusually honest film, the two timelines often reaching heartbreaking parallels. It's a dissection of a relationship founded on impulse, passion and good intentions, although ultimately not all that beneficial in the long term. The characters reflecting on missed opportunities contrasted with their initial enthusiasm is tough to watch. Extended sequences are admirable for their intensity and lack of sentimentality
(such as the love hotel sequence, whose initial comedic side soon disappears in a haze of drunken aggression)
    .

There are some scenes which don't have the impact the director may have intended, and it's occasionally blandly directed. The soundtrack by Grizzly Bear, though, is admirably muted and subtle, enhancing rather than dominating. I have seen films more emotionally involving, and without the two leads it most certainly wouldn't have the same power. But it does have Williams and Gosling, and it's what makes this film more than worthy of a viewing. It's one of those rare movies where the characters are so well drawn, and so endearingly free of cliches. The opening sequences establish them as great parents, the wooing scenes are charming and they both come across as genuinely human. It's this humanity which makes watching their sometimes silent, sometimes violent frustration so heartbreaking. This is a film all about the acting, and when the performances are this strong, you can't help but get drawn in.

Have to say I was really disappointed with this film. I really love Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams but found this really tedious and self indulgent and severly lacking in plot. The main problem I found was that I didn't believe the characters and so didn't care about them.

    I liked this a lot.

The acting was superb and I liked that there was no real plot, it made you feel in pieces of the story yourself, as slowly small details of their past is revealed.

Some of it seemed ad libbed, not sure if that was the case or not but I really enjoyed it.

Not fantastic, but a cracking little low budget flick none-the-less.

^ i can't watch anything with Michelle Williams, i can't explain it...i just have an irrational and illogical dislike for her, she seems dirty...and not in a good way. Her and Rachel Miner really annoy me to the point of loathing.

    Watched this movie last night.
It's great, the acting was superb and some scenes were quite unsettling.
I can relate a little bit too much to the story though.
I went away from the movie feeling full of despair and very sad the way life changes/turns out.

THought this was an outstanding film, felt like a grittier eternal sunshine of the spotless mind in some ways except bloody hard to watch, downright devastating film, heartbreaking, not recommended if one is feeling emotionally fragile thats for sure.
