Depends what you want and how specialist it is, many specialists have waiting lists.

The Family Business, Frith Street, Into You, Evil from the needle... There are some world-class artists in London at the moment, depending on what style you're interest in. Google any of these studios. Given the relatively low cost of budget flights to London, I certainly think it's worth travelling over considering a tattoo is for life.

This probably won't make me any friends on this forum, but to be honest I think Ireland has yet to come into its own in terms of having an artist or studio comparable to the above. There are some competent artists but I do not believe we are on a par with London or some other large European cities...

    ...Yet.

(That said, White Dragon Tattoo in Belfast is turning out some pretty awesome Japanese style tattooing at the moment)

Ireland actually has some top class artists, unfortunately due to the fact that most of the magazines are UK based and we only have 3 or 4 conventions every year compared to the 40 or 50 plus in the UK, our artists don't get the same level of exposure. Also because we have no regulations in this country and studios can just come and go, we are still considered by many in the business to be a third world country where body mods are concerned and as such there is feeling that the work here is substandard too.
If you want a good tattoo, then walk the streets, look at portfolios and browse through the web sites and you will find a good top class artist out there. Maybe the one you choose will be in London or possibly Manchester, but it's just as likely that they will be tucked away in a studio, somewhere in Dublin.

There are some great artists in Ireland that should be considered:
    Jani (artcore),

    Pavel,
    (no link)

    Justin Russell

    Karen Russell

    Joe Myler
    http://www.myspace.com/jmdsbodyart/photos/albums/tattoos/476728

England, all in all, is a good many years ahead in terms of tattoo. Sunderland has Triple 6 ( http://www.myspace.com/triplesixstudios/photos ) and Cheshire has Indigo (http://www.myspace.com/indigotattoo ) and essex has Immortal ( http://www.immortalink.co.uk/?page=galleries ) as well as the London ones mentioned above.
I think its good that you're at least considering a trip to England, it unreal how many people post on here with the thread title along the lines of "recommend me an artist in X" .

If you do go London make sure you book a reservation; went into Evil in the needle two weeks ago and the waiting room was packed out and was told to book in advance..

Yes booking in advance is the normal despite what tv's show make it appear

When it comes to in-demand artists in London: Definitley best to pick up the phone before you drop in for a consultation. Also worth finding out before the consultation about any waiting list for actual work: Valerie Vargas has a 2 year waiting list for work at this stage, AFAIK. A lot of the better artists might be booked up until Jan 2011.

Personally I think if you know what you want and have settled on a particular artist you will wait, but another option is to try ringing up every now and again and check if they've had any cancellations - worked twice for me, people do pull out of bookings, through no fault of their own.

Justin has a great portfolio of Black and Grey, if I had to get a B&G portrait done in Ireland he'd be top of the list.
