Public transport prices in Dublin

Is Dublin too expensive when it comes to public transport?

I think so. I've been in cities of the same size in Europe and we have by far the most expensive public transport service. For example, in Bordeaux, France, they have a tram --very similar to the Luas-- and the ticket for a trip --nevermind distance or lines, same price for everything-- is just €1,10. Here is about €2,10 and you pay more or less depending on distance.

Even more shocking is the fact that a monthly ticket is just €27,50 against €84,00 (for a 30-day Adult ticket in both cases).

Isn't that a rip-off? Plus, the Luas is always full of knackers and drunk people.

It's because Dublin's public transport is just not subsidised to the same extent. For example, in Dublin, fares pay about 80% of the operating costs of the buses and trains. However, in Brussels, for example only about 35% of the operating cost comes from fares.

CIE might not be the most efficient company in the world, but the reason public transport in Ireland is expensive is because it doesn't get as much public money as other European systems.

You should apply for a job with the Dublin tourism industry with a brilliantly written review like that!

Impossible to compare different public transport systems without knowing all costs/conditions / subsidies.

Dublin bus MUST operate unprofitable routes (how many people use the 44b to Glencullen?) & unprofitable times of day. They do get a public service subsidy and overall the make a small profit or sometimes a loss.

If they were making a huge profit, then there would be valid questions but otehrwise the service is priced to the market.

Also, monthly tickets are from €67 for luas to €84 and under the taxsaver plan, the cost can be offset against tax and therefore cost from €32 per month.

Thats if you are on 41% tax rate. 50% of this country pay no income tax at all

Dublin Bus charge only 50c for inner city travel,

This can't be too much to complain about. :)
