Need a little help

Here goes, I have been reading about upgrading my Iphone and the various bits that goes with unlocking and jailbreaking.

Here is some details:
Iphone 3g running 3.1.2 firmware
Blackra!n is currently installed along with Cydia etc.

So i have heard updating a 3g to 4.0+ is bad news so i just want to update my phone to 3.1.3

Can i still do this considering itunes only has 4.0.2 as an update option.

If you got 4.0/4.0.1 and installed that, then you could jailbreak it. Otherwise you'll have to with for the DevTeam to find a way into 4.0.2 before you can update through iTunes.

Is there some place on the net i could find the files for firmware 3.1.3 and put that into my itunes system folders and "restore" my phone to 3.1.3?

Im reluctant to use any firmware 4.0+ because ive heard the 3g Iphone runs like crap on it

Follow Steps 1 and 2 here.

Using the file Phil has located for you.

After this is done, you will need to re-jailbreak and unlock your phone as it is going to restore your phone to the original OS.

There are tuitorials on all available Jailbreaks and Unlocks at these links.

Phil, the file when downloaded doesnt have an .ipsw file within it

I'm presuming you downloaded the file using Internet explorer,if so try renaming the file from .rar/.zip to .ipsw .If that fails download the file using firefox.Hope this helps.

One last thing, before i do this, will i still have all my contacts afterward?

You're welcome
If your contacts are saved on your sim card you'll be fine!Or if you've selected that iTunes backs up your contacts on previous syncs.You'll be safe.For other options google can be your friend;)

Redsn0w is now telling me that it doesnt reconise my .ispw file???

Any help here?

Actually do i need to load the 3.1.2 firmware into redsn0w for it to work?

Well ive sucessfully upgraded my phone and jailbroken it.

One thing that puzzled me is, i havent loaded any unlocker and when i entred my pin it unlocked the phone.

Strange?

The unlock is for letting you use your phone on other networks, and is unrelated to the pin lock on your phone/sim

if you visited cydia in the last few months you should have the shsh backup for 4.0.1, download the firmware and restore it with the firmware umbrella server on and you can the just go to jailbreakme.com
