Unhappy with my career... what to do?

Hi. I graduated in Journalism recently and now I'm doing a postgrad in management (not something I really wanted but the only course I could pay the fees). I find it impossible to find a job or even an internship. I have started to feel all I studied was a waste of time and now I hate my degree and everything to do with my "career". I don't really know what to do since I don't have the means to do something about it (i.e. paying a different course or degree). What should I do? There are zero internship or job offers in journalism and the ones that I've seen sporadically asked for 5 years of experience and nonsense like that.

This is also affecting my relationship because I'm starting to feel unfulfilled although I know there's nothing wrong with my partner or the relationship itself. I just feel I can't get the opportunities to do something with my life. If anyone has something to say please do it and help me find a solution or the bright side! Thanks.

Look beyond journalism careers specifically. How about work as a researcher/analyst in a bank? Having completed the degree you would demonstrate that you have communication skills and the postgrad would kinda be related to understanding of a corporate structure.

What bank is hiring these days?

These days you have to go with the flow and see where it takes you

Deutsche Bank, JP Morgan, Barclays, UBS, Credit Suisse, Citigroup, Goldman Sachs, shall I continue? Grad program season is after opening and they all hire at this time.

Certainly telling him to go with the flow won't see him landed in a job. It is necessary to cast your net far and wide.

Loads of banks are hiring, many are paying bonues to staff in Ireland and giving pay rises.

    However.......not Irish banks.
    Head to the IFSC

Or better still, head to London

You only graduated recently. How long have you been trying to get a job or internship?

Getting a gig in a paper can take a lot of time and effort. Journalism jobs don't normally drop into your lap a few weeks after you leave college.
I have started to feel all I studied was a waste of time and now I hate my degree and everything to do with my "career".

Do you hate your degree and your career because it hasn't taken off or because you actually hate it?

If you were given a job in journalism tomorrow would you still hate everything to do with it?

Not all jobs come about by answering ads in papers. Do you have any contacts anywhere in the field of journalism? Have you tried talking to lecturers to see if they can give you any leads on someone you could talk to even about a few week's work experience?

The post-college year can be tough going. Jobs aren't easy to come by and you have to really put yourself out there and make sure people know you're willing to whatever it takes and work as hard as you can to prove yourself.

Don't give up until you've exhausted all avenues.
