By tenuring I refer to the practice of moving Gardai from specialist units back to general beat / patrol duties after a certain period.
It is widely done in the UK and has proved controversial in that Police Officers with strong experience in a specialist area like Traffic for instance are ' lost ' to that unit.
By the same token those in favour point out that without it Police Officers can become demoralised waiting for deaths/retirements to create a vacancy in their area of interest , for example , the Dog unit.

Just wondering if a Garda gets into the Immigration Bureau/Traffic/Forensics is he/she there for the rest of their career if they so wish or do they get moved on ?

In their Student Phase 2 they get to spend time with different units.

In some areas they do allow members to do 6 months in a specialised unit. Normally a drugs unit where new faces are welcomed and great for such work. Less and less in Traffic/scenes of crime etc as it is an appointed position and comes with a role specific course.

Yes tenuring does take place in An Garda Siochana. Or at least its supposed to. <mod snip> I haven't seen it a whole lot of time in practice though!?!

couldn't really see anyone wanting to do a stint in traffic anyway ;)
