My partners disabled mother has been given a grant to replace the aging septic tank in her house. I have been asked to look for a contractor to carry out this work, so far all we have is a letter saying she is elligable for the grant for x amount of money. I'm wondering how the procedure works, when I get a price off a few contractors, if they are lower or higher than the granted amount, do the council just pay the set amount? Do they pay the contractor or does her mother receive the cheque? Thanks in advance.

A grant by nature is only a set amount.

How they pay it i dont know, i assume the work needs to be done and you show payment then they pay her the grant

Usually the grant is to cover everything, if it costs more the recipent makes up the balance.

Be careful, ask a good local AT to put together a specification, and deal with the contractors and planning department (in emergency cases the council can ease the need for planning permission) Get at least 3 quotes from registered contractors (with insurance and C2).

The money will be paid to the recipient who will have to pay the contractor and the AT.
