Sail & Rail

    Hi everyone

I have recently book a one way sail and rail journey from Glasgow to Dublin Via Holyhead with Irish Ferries, normally i fly with ryanair but for this occasion due to times sail and rail was my only option....

So today i received the ''Sail & Rail'' ticket, and i must say if this is still their system of how they issue tickets, they really really need to update it, for anyone who is a regular user of the sail and rail they will know what i am speaking about, basically i received two paper slips (coupons) saying Glasgow to Dublin port via Irish Ferries, no name is on the tickets, it does not say Glasgow to Holyhead, I'm presuming the train company will know i must go to Holyhead etc, but this surely needs to be updated, i received these tickets direct from Irish Ferries Dublin Port, my main concern and excuse me if it seems silly, but i have only 2 coupons, im presuming one will be taken from me when i leave Glasgow Central Station, as its a long journey i need to change once at Crewe, now my worry is will Crewe train station take my second coupon, resulting in leaving me with no other ticket to get on the ferry with???? Has anyone ever experienced this before??? Its all well and good me saying to the train inspector can i keep this for change at Crewe but how likely are they to let me do that?

I have never travelled using a sail and rail ticket before and just looking for some advice as i think i may travel this way in the future as ryanir flight times are getting rediculous, i contacted Irish Ferries but the agent i spoke too was of no help at all and seemed she too didnt have an answer for me.

Hoping someone who is used to this travel can advise me, Thanks in advance and sorry for the long comment..

    Best Regards

I think the conductors/inspectors/train operatives either stamp or punch the coupons and leave at least one with you.

Thanks very much for your reply :D

just a few moments ago an Irish Ferries agent rang me back, the other agent must be new and arranged a call back for me, they answered all my questions and said exactly what you just said, the inspector etc just stamp the ticket or punch a hole in it.

Cheers for the reply though

In reality, the inspectors look at it, scratch their heads and walk away. BTW, you can book these tickets from any main line station in the UK and they give you a normal rail ticket which you show at the check in desk to board the ferry.

its often a lot cheaper than buying a late rail-only ticket, but you have to be going in the direction of a port.
