I know the PD is an old dog but how do the newer CR engines measure up? I know the CR engines are smoother and cleaner but if looking for reliability are the older engines a better bet?

Looking at a Octavia at the moment that has the older 1.9 PD 105. I'm used to a smooth CR in a Focus and fear that the old unit might just be a bit too rough, any owner opinions?

Well, just stay away from the 2.0 tdi units. Lots of them giving big big trouble. At least the 1.9 is solid enough.
I can't compare the smothness though, sorry.

Certainly IMHO - and maybe my opinion little bit biased as I deliberately ordered and driving 1.9 TDI PD - but PD nosier when idle and windows opened - otherwise couldn't find any difference (been testing 1.6 CR before ordered 1.9 PD). And I actually like this sound - very solid sound of long runner - but its rather personal preference - it might be disgusting for you.
Other then that (and the knowledge that CR newer technology than PD) - 1.9 PD absolute pluses for me - proven reliability (more then 10 years around), no DPF, turbo on from very low revs etc..
But, of course, in case if 1.9 PD is not available any more - would I get 1.6 CR - answer is absolutely Yes.

The 1.9 is noisy at idle and the power is delivered in a very narrow band. The plus side is that it is tried and tested technology whereas the 1.6 is too new to know if it is troublesome or not.

Well I had cause to borrow my bosses B6 Passat with 2.0Tdi CR unit today, and for the 2nd time in ......2 months', it did the 'Engine Fault, Garage !' light, before rolling ignominiously to a halt........again.

Last time it cost €900 to fix (one injector...)...so I'm assuming one of the other 3 has decided to join the party. If all 3, tbh, I'd torch the thing.........

Not forgetting this car, just past 100k miles, has also had a MAF and DMF in the last 15k miles as well.

Total rubbish car, imho.......we have an old PD 130bhp A4, nicknamed the 'tractor' in the yard, and whilst not without it's faults, it's crudeness is also a bit charming tbh. I personally like the shove it has, and the nature of it.

Previously I traded a B5 130bhp Passat in for a 105bhp PD Golf Plus, just 'cos the Golf had DSG gearbox, and I found the engine in that even nicer. All torque but modest bhp is, imho, a much more useful car in the 'real world.' That and the fact it will be more reliable and use less juice too, makes it all a +++.

Mind you, I love the engine in my current Saab even more.......

We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

My granadad just changed his PD For a CR a while ago and while there is much less engine noise, im not sure will the fuel economy ever be as good, though it does seem to be improving. He much prefers the CR all the same.
