    Hi,
I booked flights this week to Rio in October. We will be in South America for 2 months and 1 week before we fly from Buenos Aires to Melbourne for Christmas. This was the only flight out of South America as all of those from Santiago in Chile were booked out due to Christmas. This has affected our plans a bit which were originally to follow the regular tourist trail south from Rio and back up the west coast as far as Quito in Equador. Now, we will have to most likely fly back from Lima/Quito to Buenos Aires and this is proving to be very expensive. Has anyone travelled across from Rio to Lima overland? Or can anyone suggest any alternative options for us that don't involve going in circles as we seem to have to do now. I'm also conscious of time so I think we may need to fly. Does anyone have sample itinieraries they have done themselves or must see places we cannot miss?

Well without knowing what your interests are I can only guess.

Rio - Sao Paulo (not much to see so maybe just a quick stopover to break up the journey.
    SP - Iguazu.
Up into Paraguay, can see the jungle here if you want, I kept going and went straight to Bolivia.
In Bolovia can go to Santa Cruz, Sucre, maybe jungle tour.
    Down to Potosi for mines,
Tupiza to see the Wild West type place,
4 days salt flats tour ending in Uyuni
    Bus to La Paz.

*Pause for acclimatization - altitude is not to be underestimated*

Over the border into Puno see the islands
    Bus to Cuzco

    *More Pausing*

    See Macchu Pichu.

Possible get a cheap flight to Lima (mine was $57)
Option to go north but I would go south to
Huacachina (incredible!), Nazca, Arequipa, Colca Canyon,

Down to Chile (not sure about transport here but I think it's possible)

See some of norther Chile (it's expensive).

Make it to Santiago stopping at some nice beaches along the way.

Bus from Chile to Argentina. If you have time left stop in Bariloche or Mendoza.

That's what I'd do. You'd be killing yourself in 2 months to see more. Cuzco alone should be a week with 3 days to get used to the altitude and 4 trekking. But you may already be alclimatized after La Paz.

Bus from Lima to BA is a 5 day trip.
