Buying by Paypal or using my Credit Card, which tends to be cheaper paying online?

    Anyone any thoughts?

I see paypal as an easy (lazy) way to pay for online goods but have never really calculated the costs.

Is it a lot cheaper to pay direct using my credit card?

There are no costs to the buyer using paypal (except currency conversion, which you should always have set to use your credit card and not paypal rates).

Turns out thats just an ebay feature and not a paypal one. I cant see any option in my paypal account to change it - only on ebay.

I find the CC is always cheaper, i.e. better conversion rate even taking in cross border fees. But it is a very small margin

But there are to the seller, so when buying from shops I like and will return to I choose CC as I want the shop to maximise their profits -so in the future they can afford to offer better bargains. I think they might pay fees to the CC company but it would be less than with paypal. I am also not a big fan of paypal so do not like giving them my business.

If your buying outside of ebay, there is another reason to use CC over paypal (or if you do use paypal, make the payment via visa if the vendor allows this option ie. not logging in to your paypal account/suggesting you dont already have one).

In cases like this paypal will only investigate issues where the goods were not delivered. They will not offer any protection whatsoever if the goods are significantly not as described or defective.

This has been updated since 1/6/10, paypal offer the same coverage on and off ebay.

Edit: this may be only for english buyers and not including ireland.
