Is it just me or do you find yourself having to defend the game you love? I am on about the fact that every day we hear about politicians raising funds though golf for their parties and involving developers using nama or players and their antics off the course. Each day at work I have to listen to people who dont know anything about the sport, go on about that it is still elitiest (sp) and everyone playing it is a chancer or cheat. People seem to forget that we(the taxpayer) put more money into Croke park than we ever put into golf in this country. Why do the press love to use golf "as a side to the main course" of corruption in this country point in case the FG fundraiser Classic or the AIB paying membership to its staff. Ok it probably works in selling papers to the masses when it shouts it out in headlines on the front pages but surely the same thing happens with other sports.
Every week we hear about a footballer and his sexcapades but it goes away in a matter of hours whilst tigers story goes on and on. I think these issues arising ;) around golf is doing so much harm to the game that it could cause a lot of damage to the game.
    Opinions please.

thats a lot of stuff going on there - nama, sex scandals etc

i'm not sure what your point is

most have nothing to do really with the game of golf.
corruption in politics is hardly anything new. sports stars having extramarital affairs - again, nothing new.
just be thankful you dont live in italy.

The media often put out a quote that there are more golf courses in Ireland then playgrounds for children.
I've no idea what the figures are for both.

The quote is aimed at government spending but it isn't kind on golf, makes it seem to be a sport for elite and rich people

You should try being a League of Ireland fan

Don't think golf in Ireland is the slightest bit elitist tbh

Every weekend somewhere in the country there are fundraising days on courses raising money for charities, I guess my point is we dont hear a lot about the good that golf brings to the country but the media just love to attach the tag of golf to any scandal possible. I understand that most clubs are run by the members, for the members and most encourage young people to play the game, just suppose you have to take the rough with the smooth:)

I'm with you here! I feckin hate having to justify my love of golf to friends and family! They think that we're all a bunch of G&T swilling bigots who hate women and wear dodgy jumpers! It's funny when these heretics try it out for themselves and then get hooked!

If another twat says it's a good walked spoiled, I'll smack them in the mouth .
