This is probably a really stupid question. I was betting on the golf this morning. When I went to place the bet, the new window opened etc, and there was a box to tick for "selection" / "each way" etc. The box for Selection was ticked already but could be unticked with the bet still being able to be placed. Does this mean…

Does this mean any difference with placing a bet or not - Odds etc?

Nope it makes no difference if its just a single bet.
That box is just there to use if u had a few selections on the betslip, and u can tick whichever ones u want to include in doubles, trebles etc
