Blackadder Goes Forth "Goodbyeeee". The Greatest Episode Ever ?

Iv just completed my journey through the land of Blackadder. A most amazing show. Witty, smart, entertaining.

But nothing prepared me for the emotional and poignant ending of Blackadder Goes Forth. It is amazing that such a great show refused to go out on a farcical note, or something ridiculous. Of course, they managed to sneak in a running gag (Baldrick's "Cunning Plan"), but the ending was simply superb.

Would you agree that Goodbyeeee is the greatest ever episode of a show, or at very least the greatest ending to a series ever ?

Quite possibly. I can't think of a better 'end of' to be honest.

Its the single greatest episode ever made of anything in terms of shifting the mood and emotions.

It was on UK Gold (or Watch) the other night.. Monday or Tuesday.

It is a superb final episode.. particularly the last emotional 45 - 60 seconds, and the Blackadder theme composition on the piano over it is stunning.

You can't help but have a lump in your throat! :(

Definitely one of the best endings to a series ever; that and the ending to Six Feet Under are the two that come to my mind as best ever endings.

The funny thing is that it's the ending that almost wasn't. The ending was filmed in a particular way and with a particular plan in mind. However when they looked what they'd got in the can they realised it looked really rubbish and unsuitable. So in the edit they decided to slow it down and add the stuff like the close-ups, birds chirping and the poppy field in order to compensate and the result was spectacular.

Just going back over Blackadder again. Blackadder the first (as a character) is appalling!

    Got goosebumps watching that again.

it's one of the best endings to a show.usually they are a huge disappointment.

Fantastic ending. I love seeing the 'making of' where they talked about how horrible it looked on their first viewing. It's amazing what a bit of slow motion and perfect music can do for a scene.

I didnt like the first series at all until I got it on dvd for xmas a few years ago, and I'd stick it on while i was trying to fall asleep... it's up there with the other 3 now as far as I'm concerned. Different, but still funny.

I think the ending is quite lame to be honest. It's a comedy show, it's supposed to be funny, not poignant. Greatest ending ever, my arse. I think the best series of blackadder by far is series 3, and the best episode is the one with the duke of wellington/prince and the pauper (and the paupers!).

Comedy shows being meaningful and poignant are like rockstars trying to be political - very embarrassing and out of their depth. Look at the office ending - who cares if Tim and Dawn get together, extras ending - ooh ricky gervais slams the celebrity culture in the UK and realises he loves his friend (yawn!), american office has been hilarious apart from the Jim & Pam tripe...

The seinfeld ethos works best for comedy...no hugging, no learning! I think it's only morons who anticipate some great ending for their favourite comedy shows anyways - it's comedy, not drama, and it should not differ from a regular episode at all. Just treat it like we were observing the characters life through a window for a period of time and now somebody has pulled the curtains. Move on!

Having said that I did love the last episode of Larry Sanders.
