Foreign drivers license question

The OH has a full Brazillian drivers license but i understand that Brazil is not on the list of countries which is recognised as a licensing authority whose licences can be 'swopped' directly for an Irish one.

The question is, do insurance companies insure people with non EU license's, or will she have to go through the normal provisonal and drivers test stages to get up and running over here?

    Thanks in advance

Yes. You can drive for 1 year on a license that isn't on the swap list. But then a permit is required and you sit the driving test. A north african colleague has been through a similar process. He paid 200 euro per month for insurance for the honour of driving his first year though, so beware.

Make yourself aware of bilateral drivers license arrangements though. I know of a Tunisian girl who was able to avail of a French drivers license, and hence an EU license, through a bilateral swap arrangement. But she did spend a year resident in France before moving here.

So research what you can get for a Brazilian license - just because you can't get an Irish swapped doesn't mean you can't get an EU license. Maybe a Portuguese one?
