To try and come to the correct solution here I have to ask

How do you know he is too used to carrying things in his mouth.

Is there something happening while he is carrying things about.

Generally 4 month old pups should be just playing around

    Tell us more

At 4 months old they are still a ball of fun and games. dont expect too much juat as with anything time and patience is required. At the moment my fella is doing ok until he sees a butterfly or moth and its back to a game of I must catch that at all costs.

when ive him out aboout the yard or if hes out with a brother he pics up things and plays with them and sees more fun in carrying it around than not bringing it aobut with me, im not 2 annoyed at the lack of retrieving its just that itl be a bt more work than if he didnt do it

Had a springer like that EastTyrone, at 15yrs old he would still walk along the road with me carrying a twig, and spent his day going around the yard picking things up and throwing them with a flick of his head so he would have to chase after it. The minute he got out hunting though his train of thought was always focused on hunting. I always put it down to him being a highly intelligent dog and just needed something to always keep him occupied

loads of times.but at such a young age i wudnt worry to much about it.with pups that age everything is a game and all things have to be explored even its relationship with you.its called development.i never do anything major with pups untill as a i call it ''l see the devil in them''.next time walk away and call the dog and encourage it to come to you and i bet it will.if not throw a tennis ball in the air, high enough for the dog to see it but close enough for you to catch it and the pup will come to investigate.when he does praise and play with him for a few seconds to let him see that coming to you is fun.just my opinnion.everyone has there own ways but i find its also nice and somtimes benificial to see and hear others views.
