    What is your budget OP?

If you want to work then it'd have to be America I suppose. Unless you got a one year visa and only used 2 - 3 months of it. I like a challenge so I'd go to Asia. I went to India for a summer when I was 20 and had the summer of my life. Flights were about €500 and I spent €500 in the 9 weeks (but I was volunteering, you'd need more for travel).

firstly thanks, and if i was to get work which wud be the plan if i was in suitable country i wud hope to do it as cheaply as possible eg, few hundred euro spending money and watever it costs 4 accomodation and flights and tht. But i think if i plan it early enough and didn work on the trip i cud maybe raise 2grand, maybe a bit more??

I'm goin to American next summer, for July, August and the start of Sept

    About 50 days total

Im startin in LA and goin cross country, down to Miami, and up to New York / Boston

Ive planned my budget so it's lookin like it'll cost me about €3500-4000

If its your first big trip, I'd recommend pure travel first, esp if its only for the summer
Its a waste of a full year visa if you only use it to work for 2 months.
And its a bummer when you just use your savings to support yourself lookin for a job then you dont get one.

The recession is pretty bad in America too

If you can only raise 2000 euro or so, no point in goin to Asia as the flights will prob cost a big part of your savings

So my advice is just tour USA / Canada, based on your budget

Also, have you considered interrailing through Europe? :)

Unless you're qualified as a lifeguard or something, it'l be very difficult to get a job in the US. You'll be spent over a grand on flights/Visa and then another good bit on living til you find a job. Just about everyone I know who went on a J1 came home in debt.

Interrailing would be a good idea. I just looked it up there and a flight to bangkok next summer would be €680. If you could put together €2000, then you'd have over €1300 left to spend (but look into vaccinations before you plan too).
With €1300 you could easily have a great life in Thailand for 6 weeks or 2 months. I know some people who could travel there for 3 months on that.

If you're more adventurous I have in the last got flights to India for 4-500. I know one girl who got them for €300 by stalking every site for a few weeks.
