I bought a swissonic firewire external soundcard (same as phonic firefly) with 2 1/4 inputs and 2 1/4 outputs last week. I tried running 2 1/4 in cables from both out puts into the L+R inputs on 1 channel of my powered mixer, but only got the signal from the left output. However if i run both outputs into the mono inputs on 2 seperate channels on the powered mixer, I get both left and right outputs. Am I doing something wrong (obviously, but what?)

yeah, the left input is mono on the channel, but it has L+R inputs on 4 channels, should this not work?

hmm... well... if it's a mono and stereo input is it looking for a stereo input into the right channel (just guessing here...)

If you put something ONLY into the mixer's track's right input, what happens...?

no sound, but if put into the mono input on another channel it comes through no problem

So, which channel are you trying this on then?

I was trying it on channel 7/8

And the same thing happens on 9/10?

    So basically, to re-cap:

both channels coming out of the soundcard will make sound if they're plugged into 7?

But nothing makes sound if plugged into 8?

If that's true, it seems to me it's def not a soundcard problem... As your able to hear both channels of the soundcard.

Now are the cables your using stereo or mono, that is are you using stereo 1/8 cables, with adapters or what exactly?

Yeah, same thing happens on 9/10, but if I plug each output into 7 (mono) and 9 (mono) I get both channels. I am using mono 1/4 cables

wait, what do you mean by, "I get both channels".

And do both meters light up on the master? Or just the left one or what?

If I plug output 1 via 1/4 mono cable into channel 7 (mono) and output 2 into channel 9 (mono), I get both channels, but if I plug output 1 + 2 into channels 7 + 8 I only get sound from output 1 on the souncard even though these are down as stereo inputs (7+8) on the mixer. Should I not get left and right outputs coming through the one channel if it is stereo?

In theory you should... tell me, are 7/8 and 9/10 panned? when you plus it into 7 or 9, do both the left and right master meters light up? Or just the left?

    EDIT:

And do you have speakers plugged into A and B on the back, or just one? And which one?

They are panned, but I tried adjusting that. both L+R meters light up when plugged into mono 7 or 9

    And no meters on 8/10

what's the speaker situation...? What is plugged into what?

no , nothing at all on 8/10, sound or meter. my set-up is :

Laptop -into- swissonic external card (via firewire) -into- yamaha powered mixer -into- 2 passive p.a. speakers via speakon L+R outputs on mixer

That's totally weird... hmmm... well.. I think we can safely assume that it's something with the mixer... so the rest is kinda irrelevant...

Because nothing you've tried sticking into 8/10 shows up on the meters/input light, right?

    So...

Wait, and I hate to ask, but are you ABSOLUTELY sure the cables are MONO cables?

    That's ****ed...

As far as I can tell, for the manual, and the specs, as long as something plugged into 7/9 then 8/10 should also work...

I think they might even work independently of 7/9, but my ability to read schematics is pretty limited...

And just to be VERY clear, one last time, you can stick EITHER output from the soundcard into 7/9 and you hear something... but no matter what you stick into 8/10 you hear nothing..?

    Is that correct?

I'm at a loss... you seem to be doing everything correctly...

    Anyone else have any ideas?

And hey, call the shop where you bought it and ask... they might know... there's nothing obvious from what I can see...
