Hey shocxx..i am in the same boat
i dont know what to make of i though haha...im not worried or not worried about it
i think the more you think of it the worse it will be. The best thing to do is to involve yourself in freshers week and join a few societies that interest you.
Question lol: are u staying in a house or on campus etc?

don't worry about that. you'll meet loads of new people. being from sligo meself, a load from my school went to NUIG, but i never really stayed friends with them in galway (save for two or three). most of my friends this year are people i've only known since september.

in the lectures (if ya go to them :P), just sit beside some random person and start chatting. it's a great way to meet people :)

Best advice I can give you is to take part in the Speed Dating in the Fresher's Fair. It's not taken too seriously, everyone's just there to have a laugh and make friends.

The reason I say it is because I met one of my absolute best friends doing Speed Dating. She started college by herself too and, coincidentally, also does Earth and Ocean Science.

As well, just join a million societies and make friends there. Remember, first year is full of lonely people who are only too happy to make friends. Remember when you thought you'd never break away from your Primary School group? :)

I was the exact same last year shocxxxxxx, I knew nobody going and I'm unreal shy! But the best thing to do is just to start chatting to everyone you meet, you'll make loads of friends even if you just starting chatting to randomers sitting beside you before lectures. It gets easier the more people you get to know and chances are that they are friends with other people so you'll get to know them to! Don't worry about it, you'll get to know loads :):)

If you're not a weirdo you'll make loads of friends. In first year especially, you'll make friends throughout the whole year, so don't worry if you're not part of a big entourage a couple weeks in. There's some people I only started chattin to regularly toward the end of the year who I'm great friends with now.

From Galway, I knew a lot of people going into universities. But I met a lot of new friends as well. Its quite easy to make new friends any time during the year. Societies and clubs are great ways, just join the ones you seem interested about, put your name down on their mailing list and goto their regular events(most of them have a hour/2hour block period once a week were they just hang out and talk with each other). Don't be afraid if you don't know anything about the society, but just interested and would like to learn more. All the societies are really friendly with beginner and have tutorial and workshops.

Like what froggy said. The speed dating is a great way to meet new friends. Don't take it seriously, its just so you can go around and meet new people. Freshers week is great with events always happening, I'm unsure if its going to be 1 week or 2 weeks this year, and also try and goto the Socs day and clubs day great way in meeting the people who run them and see how friendly people are.

Another great way to meet friends is the orientation when the mentors show you around campus give you the major information of the college that you need to know i.e were the college bar is, the bialann, smokeys, the big yellow thing. Me and my friend went and just jumped into a group were we thought had people we could get talking to easily and make friends.

Student accommodation is also good, but its not a necessary to meet friends.

The the freshers week would start that Monday. So I'm guessing the week of Monday the 13th or the Monday of the 20th. Socs day is usually on the Wednesday(In the big hall next to the college bar) and Thursday is clubs day(In the kingfisher)

Lots of people start without knowing anyone else. Join plenty of societies and enjoy yourself.

    Join clubs man.
I'm going to shamelessly plug the Kayak club, but they're all good for a laugh. You'll find that you make friends with peopl in your own course through the clubs that you wouldn't usually have talked to - it gives you a second thing in common to talk about

The Student Send Off's are another way to meet people before you start college. Timetable and more details here: http://www.su.nuigalway.ie/site/view/129/

Also if you need any help with your grant application free information sessions are being held in the west, south and east:
    http://www.su.nuigalway.ie/cms/view/1923/
Could be another way to bond with some new people over confusing paperwork!

The Freshers' Fortnight timetable of events including the ever popular speed dating mentioned above should be finalised by early next week.

The many Societies are open to everyone, locals and traveling students. We had an American student on the committee of CompSoc when he was over for a semester.

    Daniel, come back! :(
