Just turn up to their meetings, introduce yourself and tell them about your problems, I dont think they charge anything.....

    LOL............

but is the AA worth it?

Like do you have enough pals no's in yer mobile phone to come to your rescue if needed? do you have a tow rope/emergency kits in your car to get towed if needed? Think it over.

Alot of insurance companies give you free break down assist anyways, Quinn do on my policy (tpf&t)

Aviva gives me free breakdown assist... or I hope its free!

I once serviced my car at advanced pitstop and got free AA membership with that. Its a limited membership though, can only call them twice.
Though now I realised going to advance pitstop is a bad idea which is why I won't recommend it.

I had it a few years ago and it really was money well spent, I had two really crap cars though! I also crashed on Christmas Day 3 months after I started driving, I can't imagine a tow would of been cheap if I wasn't a member!!!

I've been planning on rejoining for ages now, going to get it in the next few weeks

Most Insurance companies do it for free. I dont think its worth it to be honest. I would recommend it for women who do a lot of driving at night etc. Its peace of mind.

It's for the wife, and we were members before and used them a number of times. Now our cars are a few years old it's time to get some kind of cover in place.

If your cars was bought in the last 5 years and is regularly serviced and maintained. Why would you even need AA cover?

Numerous reasons, if they had an accident, blow out, keys locked in car, run out of petrol...and just because they're regularly serviced doesn't mean they won't break down.

It's good peace of mind also

That's all subcontracted stuff to the local guy with the towtruck. He'll get you home alright, probably even within a couple of hours :)

The AA itself offers a superior service where their engineers really try to fix or at least diagnose the problem. I've been a member for many years and can't recommend them highly enough. Not sure of the current offers available to new members though...

Been there done that, waste of money, no real advantage over the free cover that insurance companies offer from my experience. There are not too many faults that will render a car broken down that can be fixed on the side of the road without spare parts.

I should have mentioned I'm in Dublin. AA is usually on site within 15-30 minutes. Anywhere outside the greater Dublin area, the AA also typically use the subcontractors I mentioned. So indeed there wouldn't be any advantage there :D

I was living in Clondalkin when I was an AA member (was back in Cork once a week though) iirc it was nowhere near €100 at the time (as in it was less).

How long ago was that? I had it 4 years ago and it was the guts of 200 with all the bells and whistles

When I joined it was about £50 including home rescue :D

Paying about €180 now or so I think - same package. There is one package that is more expensive and it is well over €200 standard. Unless you can get a deal of course.

Yeah, 'twas about the 50 quid, pre euro days me thinks. Not worth €200 in a fit when the insurers give you much the same for f all.

Their pricing is quite crazy alright. The 1st year I was with them was about 180 or something, come renewal date it was about 260, I checked cost of signing up as new member for the exact same package and that was about 180 again. I forget if I cancelled and signed up again, or just told them I could do that, either way I got renewed for the cheaper amount. Come next renewal date it had gone back up to the higher amount to renew, checked my trick of signing up new again but nope, didn't work, signing up new was the same higher price so couldn't do much.

After a bit of price checking and that I switched to fleet cover as it worked out much cheaper per membership card and the handy thing is that the cards aren't tied to any vehicles so you could give them to anyone for a lend, I could even sell you membership if I had a spare I guess :D

Now, once I was changed over, whatever way their system works it must of still had me down as "not renewed" on the normal policy system and the offers I was getting to renew and stay with them were much much better. They send notice of renewal well in advance, but even before your membership expires, if you haven't yet renewed, you should get a letter offering you a cheaper price and then aswell I think AFTER it expires, you'll get a "come back" letter offering you an even cheaper price!

The AA have over 100 patrols in the country , rural areas dont have designated patrols so the work is then subcontracted to local garages , i wouldnt say outside the greater dublin area , target response time for patrols is 44 mins so they will get there as quickly as possible as if they dont questions are asked

have you ever actually had to use them ?? they carry the vixen diagnostic system , so they can diagnose the problem in minutes , majority of insurance companies will send you out a tow truck and drop you to a garage where you are then left with the bill .....The AA will try to get u going again , actual mechanics not just truck drivers .......at the end of the day you get what you pay for
