Just wondering if anybody has had any experience with the Language Centre evening courses. I am considering doing German or Russian and if somebody has completed a course could they give some details on workload, beginner/intermediate level differences and overall success.

    Would be greatly appreciated!

Wouldn't mind finding out about it myself either, I've been wanting to do a French evening class with them since like first year. Or some other random language.

Prices seem to a bit steep according to this, but then again I iz poor.

I did Spanish a fwe years back (round 2006 -07). It was fine. A lot of people in their 40s/50s which, hate to be mean, but made things go very slowly. They all had jobs and stuff so never studied in between. From them on I just decided to to use things like Pimsleur/Michel Thomas/Assimil to learn languages and I've had far better results. Those classes are then useful when you know some of the language for speaking practice.

Did a course a few years back. It was good, really cheap if you're a student or staff member in NUI. The only thing is that the level is really driven by the class you're in, so if the other students are good and push on fast, then you get a lot out of it. On the other hand if the class you're in consists of mostly people who are in it for the craic or a hobby, you're better off getting yourself a good language cd or something. It's not something you can really judge beforehand. Although if you ended up in a slow paced class and were really determined, I'm sure the teacher would push you on or correct extra work. They're really enthusiastic in there.

Are there usually exchange students around willing to do a swap chat for English? Or conversational lessons for the cheap?

You can sign up to be an international mentor and effectively get the same. I've done it anyway and asked for a French or Spanish student that I can practice with.

I did a French beginner course in 2008/2009... It was pretty good! Mix of people from about 16-60, and yeah, definitely a mix of abilities. The one good thing about it is actually learning pronounciation etc from a native speaker who'll critique you and give you advice on how to pronounce your words better etc.

It was fun, and I did learn quite a bit! I might even do one again next year!
