    Hi,

We have an eircom phone line.

Friend has just got UPC phone and can ring us, but we cannot ring him.
When we dial the number - we get no dial tone, no tone at all.

Also, this happened previously with another number - which we believe was an eircom customer (did not pursue this as we rarely call that number)

We've contacted Eircom and they say our phone connection is perfect.
Other friends with Eircom can call the UPC number.
We have 2 handsets in the house, and the same result on both - cannot call.

    Any suggestions?
We don't understand why this is happening and would welcome suggestions to fix it...

    Thanks.

Your phone number isn't really what it used to be. It's more like a URL on the internet.

When you dial a phone number, your local telephone exchange looks up a database to figure out what network that number is on and how it's going to route your call. It's a system called IN "intelligent network". This is also used for call diversion and 1800 services etc etc as well as mobile phone porting.

When your phone number is ported to another network e.g. moved from eircom to UPC, it can take a while for the database change to filter through to every exchange and every network.

It's also possible that your friend's "port" was not completed correctly. If it is still a problem in a day or so, get your friend to call UPC and check that the port has been carried out correctly.

It's possible that the database update hasn't sync'd yet with your particular local exchange / service provider.

    Hi Solair,

Thanks a mill for the informative response.

It appears to have resolved itself now - as you've stated, there is a long delay - with no dial tone or any tone, and then the UPC phone at the other end of the "line" - rings.

    All good now.

    Thanks.
