Brake problem

The brakes in our 2000 Peugoet 206 stopped working properly today.
I was heading to work and noticed as I was coming to a junction in our housing estate that I had to push the brake pedal to the floor in order for it to stop. There was also a clicking noise as I pressed the pedal to the floor. Luckily it happened just as I was leaving so I turned back and parked it up. If I had been on the main road and traveling quicker I don't think it would have stopped if I had to brake quickly.
Obviously I'll get it checked out by my mechanic but I just want your thoughts on the possible cause of this.

Sounds like your leaking brake fluid.
It'll work away until the system is empty then the pedal goes to the floor.
