At getting a summer job. Summer is nearly over.

I'm 17 and going into 5th year and I'm very frustrated. I need money badly and I'm sick of mooching off my parents.

I send CV after CV but it gets me nowhere.

I have previous experience working in my uncles bar as a porter (He sadly had to let me off) I even use him as a reference. I have experience working with Disabled children & the elderly. I am a hard working, honest person who will show up well presented with a smile on my face.

I apply for jobs where I meet the criteria, even jobs that don't require experience and offer full training. I have done this tirelessly. Where has it got me? 3 job interviews. They went well but I had to refuse all 3 jobs as I will not be able to continue working as school is starting soon.

Many of my friends have jobs, all through family members having connections.
I might have a 1 day a week job when I'm starting school, but that's a might and I refuse to keep my hopes up.

9/10 jobs on job sites require at least 1 years experience/college degree/transport. etc.
Everybody starts with no experience. How am I supposed to get some experience if I need some to get the job?

I really don't know where to go from here and it's obvious I'm not alone.

All you can do is persist.

Fair play, you're taking initiative and you seem to have your balls in the right court - but you said yourself you have had interviews which you had to refuse.

It's understandable that you'll have difficulty securing work as you're still young and in the unfortunate situation where you lack the menial experience and all too often gimmicky qualifications which the vast majority of jobs require these days.

Even with those qualifications though its not going to be any walk in the park.

There ate thousands upon thousands of other people in exactly the sane situation.
The only thing you can do is try bring something worthwhile to the table - wherever possible differentiate yourself from the masses.

Sorry for the tangent, but, what does a porter do in a bar?
Maybe I know it as a different name:o

you should have taken the jobs that were offered to you and then just quit when you started school imo. There are college grads and professionals working in mcdonalds and the likes.

Just count yourself lucky that your in 5th year, Ireland will hopefully be on its feet when your looking for a full time job in a few years time.

don't send cvs. places receive hundreds and they get binned.
You should hand them in in person to the boss who does the hiring

I'd be more depressed by the fact that you're 17 going into 5th year!!

Unfortunately that's how things are at the minute there are graduates out their looking to work for free just to gain experience and still can't find anything. I know all about silly qualifications people are asking for and sometimes it's ignorance on the part of employers I'm afraid. I did four years at third level studying computers and have been turned down for jobs as they required ECDL, I mean wtf is that about!

Fair play to you for keeping trying though, retail places are good places to look where they need extra staff at weekends, also service stations, places like that with busy times outside of school hours. Good luck with your search. :)

I think he means non bar duties that need to be done in a bar, cleaning up, luging stuff around, that type of thing.

Pretty much what adrenaline junkie said. As far as I know, they change kegs and stock in large bars and hotels where the bar staff are too busy to that kind of stuff.

Pretty much the same feeling I'm getting when applying for jobs. I'm a graduate with 2 years experience in a bar and 4 years sales experience and I don't seem to be getting anywhere as I seem to be refused on the grounds I don't have the experience they want! And that it's not just the graduate jobs, it's entry level, no experience needed jobs!

As your only 17, maybe you could try babysitting or ask around in local groups/clubs if they need someone to help out during the weekend. I can't think of anything else, but when I was your age (God that sounded like I'm ancient! ) I babysat my neighbours and parents friends kids for a bit of cash.

Well you have a good deal more experience then me, keep trying on job sites like FAS, Jobs.ie & Monster etc.

I'd like to but usually people would prefer/trust a female more to babysit, shame as I love kids. Most of my family always choose my female cousins to babysit.
