First off I'd like to apologise for inflicting Glenn Beck on the good folk of AH, but this is the only interview I could find about this.

(Aug. 10) -- The controversy over the Cordoba Initiative's proposed ground zero mosque (a development formally known as Park51) has spun off yet another plot line, this one courtesy of Greg Gutfeld, host of Fox News Channel's "Red Eye."

Gutfeld's modest proposal -- and it is not yet clear how serious he is, though he says he's not joking -- is, well, this:

"I'm announcing tonight that I am planning to build and open the first gay bar that caters not only to the west, but also Islamic gay men. To best express my sincere desire for dialogue, the bar will be situated next to the mosque Park51, in an available commercial space."


As publicity stunts go, it's an effective one. Those who oppose the mosque project can make the claim that Gutfeld's proposed Muslim gay bar is just as much an expression of freedom of speech as the mosque itself. Those who support the mosque's right to go forward, as Gutfeld himself claims to do, are forced to account for the religion's views toward homosexuality. As Mediaite's Jon Bershad argues:

If you want to be treated fairly, you should treat others fairly as well. Still though, the only thing that would make this plan perfect would be if Gutfeld created a chain of gay bars and plopped them down next to churches and synagogues since it's not like those religions have been super open-minded.

It remains to be seen, of course, how far Gutfeld will carry this plan. But already, Twitter is ablaze with ideas for what to call the place, with suggestions including Outfidel, Al Gayda, Turban Cowboy and La Hajj Aux Folles.

I don't see the issue. If he can get the land, he has every right to open it. It would be nice if the people protesting against the Islamic centre, would accord them the same right.
