Navan area - different MA styles available - recommendations please!

    I am looking for some general advice / recommendations please. I would like to learn a martial art, but am unsure as to which one?

    I am in my mid thirties, with no prior MA experience. My primary focus is fitness as I have not been involved in any form of training for the past few years. In relation to the MA itself, my preference would be more towards striking and lock's and less towards ground fighting (apologies if I am not using the correct terminology!).

    I have been researching the available clubs in the Navan area via this forum and have come up with the following;
    • Lau Gar Kung Fu – Boyne valley Martial Arts, Navan
    • Dunshaughlin Kantanni Karate-Do Martial Arts club.
    • IKKU - Navan Kenpo.
    • Genbukan Ninpo, Navan.

    If you could point me towards the particular MA style which may best meet the criteria outlined above or if anyone has any personal experience of the above mentioned clubs, I would appreciate your feedback / comments.

    I hope to visit each of the clubs above to see if there is one in particular that "floats my boat".

    Thanks in advance.

    I can see it now, a group of people sending picture messages to eachother. Ooh! How exciting! But I don't think it's quite what the OP is looking for :p

    Sorry, couldn't resist. Here's a thread about the MMA gym from last year:

    As for your criteria lialwarrior, MMA would have a lot of grappling, but it is great for fitness and really worth giving a go.

    Hi Lialwarrior,

    Kantanni Karate-Do might be just what you are looking for. It includes an extensive array of Kata, various forms of Kumite and Close Quarter Battle techniques. The main difference to most other Karate systems is that a lot of the Kata's contain as much kicks as they do punches.

    I run the Dunshaughlin club and we are training tonight at 8:30 so feel free to drop in if you want to give it a try or just have a look. You will see from the other students how good a class it is for fitness.
