HI a friend is in the US and I have asked her to pick me up an ipad to take home (32gb 3g wifi) I'm an apple virgin so I need to know

    1. is there any reason why I shouldn't get it in the us.

    2. Does it have to be jailbroken or unlocked?

    3. Now the irish ipads are on sale will the app store work ok or will I need a us account.

Basically is there any hindrance because its a us 1?

    Thanks

Is it not the same price over here when you add in State Sales tax, Federal Taxes and import duties? If you want to bring it back, I doubt Apple Ireland will help you out under warranty.

I've heard reports that the warranty will be honoured here. Perhaps someone can verify that.

iPads are the same across the globe. The only difference is the adaptor for the plug. You can pick up a spare UK/IE plug when you get home.

No need to jailbreak or unlock to get it working.

Any App Store account will work on it.

My US iPod was covered under warranty here so id say iPads should be safe.

Well its $700 in us (sneak through customs ;)) and nearly €800 here according to the apple website. That's a saving of €250!

That's if you pay import duties, there not going to stop you from bringing in an iPad if you have it for personal use (ie it's out of the box ect)

Most states in the US have there own sales tax plus federal taxes will can amount to 10-20% in total. I know for a fact they are stopping more and more people in the airport so if you've got the box in the luggage then its a bit suspicious, best of luck anyway, remember, there's no such thing as a free lunch!

Not a fact, mere rumour. I passed through the airport on numerous occasions and never, ever seen anyone stopped. And have dined on free lunches many a time too.

but you'll feel a hallow emptiness deep inside, the only known cure being an iPad.
