Wholesale cost of items

I am trying to locate a place where I can find the wholesale prices of DVDs, games, sweets or whatever it might be.

So for example if I wanted to find out the whole sale price of a Sony Playstation I would have to go to Sony and if I wanted to find out wholesale price of Coca Cola I would have to contact them. Is that correct? Or would they have companies hired to deal with queries on their behalf?

I'd imagine every product in every market in every country is different. Publicans tell me that they can't buy bottles of beer of the distributer for what a supermarket sell them for.

There are distributors. You won't necessarily get the best deal going direct to the manufacturer, or sometimes they will only go through the distributor.

These guys don't just give out this information to people they don't know. Sometimes there are catalogues you can get that have prices in them, but these are never the 'real' prices. There are always discounts and rebates.

The handiest way to figure this out is to talk to someone who purchases from them regularly.

that may well be true ,ive often bought "supermarket" beers in pubs and "only to be sold in a multipack" cans of coke in newsagensts

same goes for crisps but this p1sses me off cause the bags are smaller  god damn cheats !

    $64m question:D

I worked in retail/distribution years ago.
The company I worked for had the exclusive agency here for specific product lines such as Tate & Lyle sugars/syrups.

The price that we charged to the retail outlets for this product included a fair and reasonable markup.
The actual selling price that the retail outlets sold the product to the punter was high by comparison.
The difference between the selling price to the punter and the price we charged to the retail outlet was huge.

You could try to approach the actual manufacturers of the product to enquire.
The other way is to contact the companies who have the agencies for these products.
Although again, i'm not sure if they can/would divulge the information.

Have a drive around Robinhood / Parkwest area of dublin 12.

    Robinhood
    JR Byrne, Musgraves, Cagnett.

    Longmile Rd.
    Sean Fagan (dvds / electrical)

    Parkwest / Killeen road
    Budget Greetings / Fitzpatricks.

All will insist on current trading confirmation (invoices / statements from current suppliers) & all will have minimum order value. Some will also requet that you are in a similar trade, so if you were a Tile shop, JR Byrne would not sell to you as they specialise in confectionery.

You are asking the $64 000 question as someone pointed out.

You really have to be able to get people to trust you and that takes time. Building up a relationship with a supplier is the key. Remember they have long-term customers they want to keep happy and will not annoy them by being too liberal with the information they give out to the people just coming into the business.

Expect to pay more at the start until the supplier gets to know you and know you and trust you. They might then start giving you some of the discounts that they give the long-standing customers. It will take time to build up a list of suppliers and people you do business with so that you can get business references. Business reference are required by some suppliers and are usually always asked for if accounts are to be set up with them.
