    Hi

I've an old Louis Vuitton trunk and am wondering where I might get it valued? I'd also like to be able to date it, if possible. Can this be done using its serial number or something like that?

    Thanks! :)

That could well be worth a fortune. I've seen his trunks go for a lot of money. Your best bet for a valuation would be Louis Vuitton themselves. There's a chance they will be interested in buying it too, depending on good condition.

You might have to take a trip over to London with it, but it could be worth it.

    Good lord.

I imagine it would have to be in perfect condition to get that kind of price?

Wow, that trunk looks as if it has never been used. Mines the same model, but definitely more tattered! I don't have that inside shelf either and the material inside has some water damage, but the outside looks good, if a little worn. I'm really dying to know how old it is. I did email Louis Vuitton and they asked me to most some photos over to them, though haven't got around to it yet.

We're curious now. Post the pics here too.

You could take a look on ebay as well. Thats where the less-than-perfect condition stuff can be found.

As you can see, I don't dust very often!

Looks like you could put it on ebay for a few grand.

Of course I dont know whether you'd get that. Track some sales and see what and see what they actually selll for.

Don't think I want to sell it, just more interested in its history etc. I probably should clean it though. Would soap and water be ok? Don't want to damage it

Dont put soap and water near it!!!..at least not yet..people often destroy things attempting to clean them.

Email louis vitton and ask thier opinion on the correct care for this item..maybe you could telephone an auction room and ask thier opinion too.

    hi there
if it is a genuine louis

there should be a small brass prass plate somewhere on or in the trunk
    with four numbers on it

and for example if it was made in october 1998 the numbers would be 9810

    or august 2010
    1008

but dont freak out if you cant find the plate from what i remember it doesnt mean it's fake it could be just really old :D
and therefore lots more valuable :D

there is also a louis store is brown thomas in grafton street Dublin and patrick street Cork
    they might value it there

    Thanks for all your advice.

I definitely won't use soap and water so...

As for the plate, I can't find one. All it seems to have is a serial number inside on paper and a number on the lock. I might just ask them in Brown Thomas and see what they say.

what is the serial number ????
on the paper and the lock
can you put up a picture ???

oh i just found out they only started using the brass plates in the early 80's so your trunk is probably at least 30 years old :D

have a look at this http://www.ehow.com/how_2044770_identify-authentic-louis-vuitton-date.html it explains the code in a lot more detail

here's a picture of the inside label. Sorry the file is rather large and I've no idea how to make it smaller :o

I wonder if this applies to trunks too?

I have the trunk about 25 years and my Dad had it prior to that. It definitely looks (and maybe smells a little too inside) old.

well it's definitely genuine estimating by the number youre looking at around 1920's (ish) possibly a bit sooner

here's a little piece i found on Wiki

Since the 19th century, manufacture of Louis Vuitton goods have not changed: Luggage is still made by hand.[4] Contemporary Fashion gives a preview of the creation of the LV trunks: "the craftsmen line up the leather and canvas, tapping in the tiny nails one by one and securing the five-letter solid pick-proof brass locks with an individual handmade key, designed to allow the traveler to have only one key for all of his or her luggage. The woven frames of each trunk are made of 30-year-old poplar that has been allowed to dry for at least four years. Each trunk has a serial number and can take up to 60 hours to make

so yeah it's definitely worth a few quid
oh and if brown thomas cant price it then it would be well worth a midweek trip to paris to where it was made they will be really helpful to you in the store maybe even tell you who made it :D

Oh yes a trip to Paris sounds good! :D

Yup. I wouldnt want to check it in. Have you ever looked out the window if the plane before takeoff and seen those guys hurling luggage all over the place? And if it was raining?

I found your subject when I googled "Old Louis Vuitton trunks".
I live on the country in south of Sweden, and yesterday when I cleaned my aunts old chicken-house where she keeps old furnitures I saw the LV logotype and whent crazy.
I found a beautiful old trunk and fell in love. I have just taked in inside, and yes it is quite worn out and the cold storage probably made it not so happy, but I just love it! And it seems to have a whole lot of storys to tell.
It has been fixed on the top but that is so charming, offcourse it puts down the value.
It belonged to my mothers grandmother who traveled all over the world, a couple of times to america but also to africa and asia. And my mother told me the story that she was once expected to come to her brother in America but she did not turn up. Weeks after this they recieved a letter from here where she told that she traveled to Paris instead and that she would turn up later! Perhaps this was the time when she bought it! =)

I want your help to find out how old it is. And what is the name of it?
    Please help me!
As you can se on the pictures there is a serialnumber. But that maybe does not help you.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,900 ✭✭✭InTheTrees

They certainly are well made arent they?

I'm afraid I'm no help but i'm sure you can get information on that serial number from the factory.

Be careful how you clean it. Very gentle. I'd just blow the dust off.

nope no water and soap on it.
I am thinking of to grease the lether a little bit but I want to check it up if it is ok before I do it. =) Is it??
I saw on youtube some guy who was filming when he rubbed all the locks and that so that it became shiny and rubbed the wood details with sandpaper and then oiled them. And that was exactly the same bag as mine.
In sweden this is absolutely forbidden on antiques.
    So that will not happend!

STEP AWAY FROM THE TRUNK !!!!!!!
dont wet it in any way
    dont sand it
    dont even smell the leather
and definately dont sand the bloody timber

take it to your 'local' LV supplier there's definitely one in stockholm
and ask them directly chances are they will have some leather wax specifically for LV trunks

BTW my guess is around 1920's aswell just a rough guess from the serial number maybe a bit earlier

here's the contact info for the stockholm LV store

LOL!!! I promise I won´t tuch it! I have only vacuumcleaned it carefull to get rid of the spidernets and old flies ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 102 ✭✭Fragglefur

I'm no help either. I didn't do anything else about mine in terms of getting it valued or dated. I don't want to sell it, so it's not really an issue. I've had it since I was a child and really love it. I have cleaned it in the past with everything from soap and water to Jif spray (). Not anymore though. I just dust it once in a blue moon. I prefer the older dusty unkempt look anyway (or maybe that's just my excuse for avoiding housework!). I have my tv perched on it now.

Have you been advised how much it could make at auction??

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8 Gabbisen

    Hi again.
Lauritz.com I think do have a international site because they sell objects in over 300 countries. But I will call the tomorrow to check!
They put a value on the trunk for about 20.000 sek that will be about 3000 dollar. =)
