Insurance renewal

It's that time of year and my renewal quotes are annoying me!

    I'm a 24 year old female
    6 years NCB
    3 years with Full License
    01 1.5 Almera
    Living in Dublin

    733 yoyos!
    I am not impressed!.

I had a claim last December as my car was stolen and it was settled for 2k.

I was told it wouldn't effect my NCB but now its effecting the pricing in other ways Grrr!

There are insurance companies that don't let theft hinder your policy cost.

Does anyone know what companies these are?

What was your cost last year? I know insurance has gone up the past 12 months anyway!

My quote was 960 last year and this year it's 960 again. I'm just glad it hasn't risen even though I'd normally be expecting it to drop. I heard alot of people have had their premiums increase.

I'll be going fully comp this year for 1280 euro. Not looking forward to paying that next month

    Who are you with?

I'm 21, 3 years NCB and a male and have better quote then that.

If that is the quote that they sent out to you. Go in and talk to them face to face. You can often get a couple of hundred knocked off that way

You have just got to get out the Golden Pages and start ringing around.
This year I was quoted 730euro to renew my policy even though I had changed down on car size. So far now I am down to almost half my original quote... so get phoning... every year I get cheaper quotes than my renewal quote.

I went through a broker- insure.ie but policy is with AXA.
    It was 400 odd last year on a 1.1 L 04 corsa.
When I was getting prices before I got the almera, I checked the difference in getting a 1.5 against a 1.1 and it wasnt much at all, thats why I went for the 1.5 now my insurance guy is saying yes its due to it being a 1.5L.
Got on the phone today and he gave me a new quote from Aviva of 575 only cos the house insurance is with Aviva too.

I've doing all of the online quotations :(

Its a step up in car so expect it to cost more; its unreasonable to expect to go from a 1.1 Corsa to 1.5 Almera and pay the same insurance. Add the claim to that and the fact that premiums have gone up anyway this year and the initial quote you got is about right Id say.

The quote from Aviva is good considering the car and the claim. Id be surprised if you can change company with a recent claim on your policy (Aviva told me I had to be claim free for 3 years before theyd take me on) but definately consider it.

And youll get better results by ringing companies rather than the online systems. You cant bargain with a website!

As djimi says, don't bother with online quotes - ring.

Plus... the person on the other end of the phone is a salesperson and is most likely on a commission, so its in their interest to get a deal done.

I got my insurance renewal last week. I rang up and they dropped €50. Still going to ring around.

As an aside, I had a stone chip on my windscreen repaired. Do I need to tell other insurers about this?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,746 ✭✭✭✭Misticles

    Did you claim for it?
In the drop down menu to add claims online- there's a windscreen option.

If you have windscreen cover I doubt it would make a difference, but I don't know :(

No. You inform them of any accidents, claims or convictions.

I got it fixed by the insurance, I have windscreen cover. I saw the windscreen option on a site that's why I was asking.

It's just my proof of NCB says I've 0 years claim free on the policy with 50% NCB and I'm on point 9 of the No Claims discount scale. The only claim I've made is for the windscreen. I just don't want to get a policy and then get it voided as my proof of NCB doesn't match what I said.

I may just mention it to a company I don't want insurance off and see.

    Thats like mine.
I get 70% NCD and it has on the NCD cert 0 years claim free on this policy.
It reflects the claim made for the theft.

I'm with Quinn. I do drive a big engined car so my insurance will always be high. But it is about 20% more than I expected.

I've yet to ring around so maybe I can claw back 200 euro of the quote :)

Throw your details into Quinn's online quotation while your at it. My renewal from them came in at 520 euro, I put my details into their online system and the new quote is 440.

This happened a few years ago also and I just let my current policy lapse, and then started a new policy with them.

I think windscreen cover is seperate to actual car cover. If you don't have windscreen cover as an aside, you would be claiming off your car cover which would mean an increase in your premium.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,237 ✭✭✭✭djimi

I would notify a new insurance company of the claim for the windscreen when getting a quote, but I dont think they will take it into account, at least none Ive ever spoken to have cared about a claim for windscreen repair.

I done that too actually. I a quote of 1679 euro. Then I rang Quinn and got a quote of 1621 euro. I started to complain then she said the specialist quote team would ring me back. Their quote is completely outrageous. Are they trying to loose customers?? 123 and FBD were both surprisingly normal quotes for companies that don't like under 25s.

    24yr Male

    Fully Comp
Quinn: 1679 euro ( Waiting on a call back )
    FBD: 1231 euro
    NoNonsense: 989 euro
    123: 1214 euro
    Chill: 1600

Looks like I will be using NoNonsense.

Anyone I know or who have read who are with Quinn have said their prices have shot up this year. They keep blaming it on last winters weather apparently...

That and quinn are now being run by administrators. Still a shower of cowboys based on my own personal experience of dealing with them and from people I know working in the insurance sector.

My own insurance increased by 130euro.

    26 Year Old Male,
5 years no claims under my own name
    9 years driving experience
    No Claims on my policy
No Claims Protection, Fully Comp, Windscreen Cover, Driving Other Cars
    750euro

Was 620 in 2008 and the broker was cheaper than the quote from the Insurance companies office.

The inital quote to renew was in the region of 950euro!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,746 ✭✭✭✭Misticles

Did some ringing earlier, got the following:

Quote me = 546 with all the extras and standard excess

123.ie = 549 with all the extras, 500e excess but full NCB protection

Axa = 546 with all the extras or 522 with extras but 300 excess.

all the others didn't even come close ha

Can someone tell me more regarding the excess? the 500 seems steep, he says it's cos I'm under 25!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,237 ✭✭✭✭djimi

€500 is indeed very high for the excess; most of the time its in the region of €200-€250. Ive never heard of a company having higher excess depending on age (apart from XS Direct who are a whole different matter altogether) but they may have used it as a way to lower the premium to a competative amount (lots of companies offer the customer the chance to increase the excess to lower the cost of the policy).

FWIW I wouldnt be bothered taking out a policy with that high of an excess; not unless it was considerably cheaper than everyone else, which doesnt seem to the case.
