I said i would start a new thread rather than answering in the PSN+ one as its going to be a huge game and will take that thread way off topic.

Demo is out tomorrow on PSN (today on PSN+ and Xbox live) The game is an open world game like GTA but with massive improvements to combat and production levels. Set in the 40's and 50's in a fictional city you try to rise up through the "family" to become a made man.

The old code i got to play was very good but looking at the demo today its come on leaps and bounds.

My preview is here if you want to read it, its more or less what i said above but just in more detail and with screens and a video (once i can get the stupid video to stop acting up)

In fairness, you had "Demo" and "PSN+" in thread title...:o

That's why I lumped it into the PSN+ thread.

Don't worry, i'll be putting PSN+ no where near my titles in future :D

I'll download the demo tomorrow (my Xbox HDD is currently stuffed, thank you Sony and your bigger standard hard drive sizes :p). Hopefully will be a good game: first was fun, but the difficulty curve was crazy. There's that stupid ass race that is almost impossible to win (they had to patch it) which is where I gave up. But I'm a sucker for the 1950s - damn you, Mad Men - so cautiously optimistic!

    Why?

    Why?

Felt like it was offering nothing new to the sandbox genre. Maybe it's just me but I could see myself getting bored of it after a few missions.

I will give it a go again tonight but at the moment, it felt like an average game.

I had no problem anyway didn't come across any big hills as such but i was able to fly around the place in the little convertible car.

What time does the store usually get updated? Really wanna play this.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,776 ✭✭✭Noopti

First one was a fantastic game, played through it three times. This is probably one of those games where a demo is not the best way to judge it as if it is anything like the first game, it is the story which drives the missions that is engaging.

It looks like a good story driven game (my favourite type) but the graphics on the PS3 are pants.

No anti-aliasing at all, jagged edges everywhere and subdued colours compared to other versions. Also all the grass is missing :wtf: Huge draw distances.

    PS3 gets shafted yet again.

    Looks great on PC though.

I played it.Was a good game but dont think its a purchase for me.Think I'll rent it for a week instead.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 10,684 Mod ✭✭✭✭F1ngers

Played the demo. Won't buy as a full price game but will pick it up for a score when the price drops.

Did enjoy the music though and the playmate...;)

I hope they haven't dropped the ball with the sequel. I am going to give them the benefit of the doubt and purchase it at launch, because even if it has 50% of the charm, atmosphere and story of the first it will be an epic game.

I seem to be in the minority but I really liked the demo. I've already preordered Mafia 2 after trading in with RDR and I'm really looking forward to it. It was so much fun driving around Empire City last night in a little red convertible with a great Sinatra tune on the radio. Although one of the things I loved about the original was that you had to obey the speed limits and traffic lights.

I also thought the cover mechanics were pretty good in the demo and in that respect it reminded me of Uncharted more than GTA. I like the realism that you can get killed in a serious crash or if you stand in front of someone with a tommy gun you will only last a second or two. Plus police cars will swarm around you and it is difficult to get away from them unless you drive well.

It's really as much about the atmosphere as the gameplay mechanics and I'm much happier with a relatively linear story that is action packed with loads of interesting missions than a sprawling sandbox game that is littered with rather dull and repetitive missions.

The game runs terribly on the PS3 but I still enjoyed it. I can see the instant death on head on crashes becoming annoying though.

ya its a very bad, alot of slow down (not sure of the technical name for it)

    the driving is brutal too

Ps3 seems to be second rate. I can't see why they can't get the games to be closer it's not like the ps3 is new, the ps3 has the best looking exclusive games but if it's multi-platform is usually worse.

Ah fuk sake! I heard there was issues with grass on ps3 but that is just rediculous. If the devs are okay and satisfied releasing a game like that, it should be cheaper on the PS3. How can they get away with releasing the same game for the same price when 1 is noticeably inferior!

I mean the PC always varies depending on the rig but cmon, they should really be trying to produce the same products for xbox and ps3.

I would get this on PC but I seriously need a few HW upgrades!

What the hell is up with the aiming? It doesn't auto-aim but it doesn't give you full control either, it's some sort of confusing middle-ground

Agreed that car-crashes could get annoying, so not 100% sold on this yet

Why do people hide scores in spoiler tags.....

I never got that. It reveals nothing about the game. Do some people read reviews AFTER they finish the game? :)

The last time I read a thread about a game coming out with scores attached, some people got upset about 'spoiler tags' not being attached in the thread. In order to save someone being upset I said I would attach them :)

this is still likely gonna be the 1st game am gonna buy in a fair few month unless i pick up Dog Days first, thats how sparse even half decent releases have been but the pic above is the most disturbing PS3/XBox comparison i have ever seen. dude looks sad.. where is the grass? looks really content in the Xbox pic

nevermind the other inferior aspects :( are sony gonna do away w/ this cell processor sh!te for PS4?! cos obviously it was the wrong choice.

edit: google is my friend but no decision yet actually, it seems.. whats the lifespan of this gimped iteration of PS? sony needs to go Intel cos too many refuse to commit to the Sony Exclusive Cell Processor School of thought. similar reason for there bein no Left4Dead whatsoever on the platform

Was not expecting such a inferior PS3 version from EA seeing as the PS3 is their "preferred" console this gen.

    I thought Mafia was a 2K game?

So it is.. I must be getting it confused with a similar Ea game...

EDIT: Could have sworn at E3 EA said that Mafia 2 would get exclusive PS3 content which led me to believe it was an EA game.
