You cannot connect a satellite to a UPC box to get channels and you cannot connect cable to a sky box to get channels. But they can have the same functions that you mentioned recording etc.

So does that mean the France thing won't work? (Im sorry for my thick headedness I'm totally ignorant about all this stuff)

No it won't. A Sky box works any place the correct satellite can be received, and you own it. Also it receives free satellite signals. If you have a big enough dish it's possible as far away from Ireland as North of Italy.

An UPC Box belongs forever to UPC and ONLY works on their coax cable system, which is only in specific cities and towns. Generally speaking the viewing card won't work in another country's cable system, even if UPC owned and there are zero free channels on cable.

They are completely different kinds of Pay TV systems. Only the Sky box can be used for Free channels without a card or when a subscription is cancelled.
