What, in your opinion, is the most embarrasing thing any Irish leader or Government has ever done?

IMO it is probrably the "summit" with Boris Yeltsin back in 1993? The "historic face to face".....you see Haughey a few years before hand found out that Gorbachev was going to come through Shannon so his plane could be refueled. The Irish Government decided to call this a "summit" and Haughey would be there to greet the Russian President along with other Irish dignatories. That "summit" actually went pretty well until Gorby inquired to Haughey about a picture of fromer President Hillary on the wall of a Castle in Co Clare. When Haughey explained who it was Gorby looked puzzled and said "but are'nt you ruled by a monachy?" - Haughey was VERY flustered apparently and said through gritted teeth - "not since 1921". Whilst that was embarrasing enough the REAL snub lay ahead.

Reynold's, when he was Taoiseach, thought he would repeat the trick with Yeltsin - thus a piss stop for the Russians suddenly became a "summit" for the Irish - and sure enough the red carpet was laid out and all the ministers and civil servants were waiting to greet Yeltsin on the tarmac at Shannon..............only, he did not get off, he was too drunk! (apparently). What's more this hillariously embarrasing snub to our Governemt took place in front of cameras from many global news organisations. Sure enough from the BBC to CNN it was "stupid Irish" time again. And this really was stupid and hugely embarrasing for the country.

The thing is it was ALL our muppet Government's fault. Did they honestly think a Russian President would give a monkey's about a "summit" with the Irish!? Id say it was done on purpose - i.e your not important, stop pretending you are and fcuk off and leave us alone. That was the impression everyone got. Some say the " Yeltsin drunk on the plane" thing was made up to cover a home truth about what our dickhead politicians do be up to.

But anyway there is many more examples - destroying the economy, corruption, stupidity have all bought international attention to this country at one time or another.

At what moments did you hear about this country abroad and just say to yourself:

You know, moments that are just so embarrasing.

That knee jerk ban on all the headshop stuff was pretty cringey

Certain headshops are still opening till 4 at night selling chemicals that are far far worse than the ones that were being sold before the ban. Nice work Government!

Put an obese childless woman in the position of Minister for Health and Children.

    That's just retarded.

'Sitting on the sidelines, cribbing and moaning is a lost opportunity. I don't know how people who engage in that don't commit suicide because frankly the only thing that motivates me is being able to actively change something,' Bertie Ahern.

Well Bert, they were right. Are you going to kill yourself?

    Dunno about that

Quality Illegal drugs in the form of MDMA and to a lesser extent cocaine are after flooding this country since the ban of mephedrone. This means the government are not getting any tax off the drugs trade yet there are still large amounts of people taking drugs.

The ban on headshop RC's has pushed the drug trade right back into the drug dealers hands, pretty cringey decision from the government imo

The most cringeworthy has got to be the government acting as if any sh1t job that was done before the recession, was actually done by an entirely different government, and has absolutely nothing to do with the present shower of useless fuckwits, in any way, shape, or form.
