New Contact Lenses

    Hi,
I recently collected my first pair of contacts. I've been wearing glasses for about 20 years and had never tried them before so I was pretty excited about being able to see properly without the glasses :)

Anyway, after the initial discomfort when my eyes got used to the alien presence - I noticed something which is proving way more difficult to overcome!

Basically I constantly feel like my vision is moving in and out of focus - driven by the movement of my eyes in their sockets. It's very strange and uncomfortable.

What I'm trying to understand is if everyone who wears contacts experiences this - i.e. is it something I just need to get used to?

Even wearing them for 4/5 hours seems to make no difference - I have astigmatism but not sure if thats relevant or not.

    Cheers!

That is not normal. They should fit comfortably & not be affected by eve movement.
Did you get them fitted by an optician?
Generally on new users they will go over taking them in & out a number of times .

Yes, I got them in vision express - they went through the whole procedure. I had said from the start that my vision was blurred etc. I was told it would settle down.

Oh well, doing a little more internet research on contact lenses/astigmatism - it appears that this can be a problem. The shape of the lens required to compensate does not always 'sit' on the eye as easily as it might for other corrections.

It makes them pretty much useless to me - time to cancel my direct debit :(

I'm a contact lens wearer with an astigmatism as well, and I know the sensation that you are describing. As you said, the lens has to 'sit' a particular way on the eye, so when you put it in first, it may be blurry. However, it should orient itself properly quickly enough (within minutes at the longest), and become clear. It can happen at times that the lens will move out of position slightly, and have to resettle (usually happens to me when I rub the eye, or if something makes contact with my face/eye during sport).

I'd be going back to the optician and insisting on getting it rechecked if I were you, or if you don't have faith in them, and can afford to get a test elsewhere, do that and see how their prescription matches up to the VE one.

Thanks Cython - thats exactly what I would have expected i.e. an initial bit of discomfort and then it would settle down.

I definitely think I'll try somewhere else - anybody got any recommendations?

    Cheers

I'd say your best bet is a contact lens specialist. I see one in Cork - Peter Crisp (Egans Opticians) - and he specialises in contacts that require a special fit.
