Ok i imade a boo boo.

I had an iphone 3gs that was jailbroken and unlocked and I was using a Vodafone sim but i somehow pressed restore in itunes which brought it back to its origanal settings which is O2 UK.

When I connect to itunes now it says " insert a valid sim with no PIN LOCK to activate phone".

Is there a way around this so i just need to activate it so I can jailbreak again?

Would any O2 UK sim work in it just to activate iphone?

Any wanna lend me a working O2 UK sim just to activate my iphone???

Just jailbreak and unlock it again. Do you know what firmware you were running?

I have done this a couple of times yo phones in the same situation as yours.

    Edit: I use redsn0w

I tried using redsnow 7.1 but it asks for your ipsw or something but when I browsed I don't know where to find. The firmware is 5.13.04

Yea it's locked to O2 Uk. Don't won't to have to top up and then wait for a couple of weeks when I could do it in a couple of mins if I get a lend of a sim or if I can get redsn0w to work for me

    activate with uk sim
jailbreak with jailbreakme.com through the phones browser
search and install ultrasn0w on cydia
    phone unlocked..happy days

Do as iPwnage says, or get an active O2 sim and try.

If O2 officially unloch the iPhone, does that mean OP won't have to worry about hitting restore in iTunes?

I sorted this exact same problem only recently
You'll basically need to restore to 3.1.2 and then use a custom 4.* firmware that's already activated to bypass the screen.

Once done, jump onto wifi, and get ultrasnow on there and you're done

Let me know if you need steps...in work right now.

I tried to activate using a UK sim but no joy.

Can I resore to 3.1.2 by not connecting to itunes.
I cant get to the homescreen on the iphone

    Download firmware(version e.g. 3.1.3 etc) from here

you may also need to download the two bootloaders from here

You always have to use iTunes to load the firmware.
What you do is to add an entry into your windows/mac host file to point gs.apple.com to the cydia server. This will 'trick' iTunes into letting you use a firmware other then the latest from Apple. this assumes you've said yes to backup your phones shsh blobs to cydia, but I'd say you probably have. (even if you didn't know)
Ok, so once you get the custom 3.1.2 firmware on there already activated, use PwnageTool to create your own 4.0.1 firmware, again, already activated, and you're done.
I'll conform all these steps when I get home later.

Iggy, can you get it into DFU mode?

You're prob going to lose everything. Do you know what software was on the phone when you got it? 3.0.1?

Do you have a backup stored on your computer? If so can you do a shift+restore??

It was on 3.1.4 or something and I updated to the latest one is it 4.0.1?
How do I do shift and restore?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,104 ✭✭✭Swampy

Instead of just clicking restore, you hold down shift and click( nit sure left or right) restore and you can browse for s ipsw file to use to restore to.

However you may not need to if you just need the sim unlock.

Download the ipsw file and use redsn0w first and see of that works.

No point Swampy, iTunes will dial out to Apple, check the digital signature on ipws file and if it's lower then 4.0.1 will reject with an error (usually 1604 in my experience)

    Iggy, we'll get this sorted.
You on Mac or Windows? I'm a Mac man meself but can't see why we can't do this on Windows too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,104 ✭✭✭Swampy

Surely redsn0w should unlock it with the correct files to do so.

I went into DFU and pressed shift + restore.
    The ipsw was iphone2,1_4.0.1_8A306 Restore.ipsw

I did this but it would only restore it back but still not activate itunes.

I tried redsn0w version .95 but it was unable to recognise IPSW.

What version do i need for 3GS do you know?

Ok, i'm doing this from memory, hope I have it all in the right order etc.
    Download these files first:
    3GS 3.1.2
    Recboot
    Blackra1n
Your gonna need to create or download a custom 4.0.1 activated firmware.
Let me know if you need one and I'll upload the one I used. A search in google should get you some.
    1. First point your host file to saurik's server....instructions for that here. If you're Win7, do a run as admin on notepad.exe, C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts and add that line as described. Hit save. Leave open as you'll undo that later.
    2. Put the phone into DFU recovery mode and do a shift restore to the 3.1.2 firmware above. It should restore ok but will get stuck in recovery mode.
    3. Use Recboot to get phone out of recovery mode.
    4. Use Blackra1n to 'pwn' the phone (hate that word)
    5. Now, remove that line from the host file above and save.
    6. Open command prompt and type ipconfig /flushdns
    7. Put the phone back into recovery mode
    8. Shift restore to the custom 4.0.1 firmware and your done. Custom firmware will have cydia already installed (or should have!)
    9. Use ultrasn0w from cydia to use your own sim.
Try and do this before the next firmware release too.

Let me know how you get on

    Hi
    Thanks for the guide.
I have done the shift and restore to firmware to 3.1.2 and is now stuck in recovery mode. I have recboot downloaded in a zip file. When i extract files i get about four folders. I ran the recboot.exe folder and when i press recovery mode it says dll is missing. Will i rename the .zip file to .exe? or how do i get the whole zip file to run?
Im in work now but will try again later

Ok I'm a the point where I downgraded and it's stuck in recovery mode. How do I get recboot to work. I pressed exit recovery and it says device is recovering but does nothin

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,288 ✭✭✭✭Standard Toaster

What dll does it say it's missing?
Try right-clicking it and running it as administrator and see if that helps.
Like i said, i did all the above on a macbook pro

:D:DOk I got this sorted with this
    http://www.fonefunshop.co.uk/cable_picker/94917_iPhone_Activation_Sim_Card.html

It was about €19 delivered in 2 days.
You can get one here for €4.50 delivered but will take about 2 weeks
    http://www.priceangels.com/Universal_Activation_Sim_Card_for_iPhone_2G___3G___3GS___4G_p6591.html

You just pop it in and straight away you are into itunes and able to activate.
Might be handy for people who restore their iphones by mistake and dont have the original sim

Have you shsh files backed up on cydia or locally? And you host file changed to point to their location.

    okay heres the full story:
Accidently upgraded a friends phone to 4.0.2, her phone was previously unlocked so this relocked it. So after extensive searching for hours online i figured out how to downgrade it back as i had the sshs thing saved for 4.0.1. So i down graded, but then the phone became stuck on the "insert valid sim card screen" and since she bought the phone in canada we dont have access to the original sim, i tink ive just made things go from bad to worse. Now i got a guide which showed how to bypass this activation screen but that i would require 3.1.2 to do it, so i attempted to restore to this, but the iphone froze and would only restore again once i clicked on the newest update from apple, i.e back to 4.0.2. So now ive her iphone, stuck on the insert sim screen running 4.0.2 !! total disaster :(:(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,003 ✭✭✭iggy

Where are u based? If u in DUblin u could use my activation sim to bypass activation screen.
If it's on 4.0.1 then u can jailbreak and then unlock
