Just on as we speak, no mclassic but some decent lines and Simon is a pretty decent comic actor.

    Anybody else seen this?

I have no idea of what channel is showing it.

    I quite enjoyed it.

That Clive fella was a cnut.

I liked it - thought it started off a bit slow but really improved as the show went on

BBC 2, it was on at 10pm. Not sure if it will be repeated or not.:o

I was in a total rush when starting the thread thus explaining the "epic" opening post!

It was funnier than I was expecting it to be. Don't like the Clive character though.

There was an "In memory of" after the credits for the actor who played the grandfather, Geoffrey Hutchings, who died July 1st :(

Simon Amstell's new comedy Grandma's House opened to more than 1.5m viewers on Monday evening, according to overnight audience data.
Starring Amstell, Linda Bassett and Geoffrey Hutchings, the show's first episode averaged 1.56m (7.6%) on BBC Two between 10pm and 10.30pm.

I sky+'d it as I'm a big fan of Simon Amstell.

Still wish he'd come back for another series of 'Buzzcocks'..

.. speaking of which, I wonder is that coming back for another series?

EDIT: Did a quick Google and found this interview with Jupitus from The Daily Express today:
JUPITUS REVEALS WHY HE ALMOST LEFT NEVER MIND THE BUZZCOCKS
    Tuesday August 10,2010

COMEDIAN Phill Jupitus, pictured, has revealed that he almost quit the long-running show Never Mind The Buzzcocks because he felt current host Simon Amstell was too nasty.

Jupitus, 48, who has been a team captain on the show since it started 14 years ago, admits in his new memoirs that he was unhappy when Amstell replaced original host Mark Lamarr in 2005.

“It struck me with Simon that people were being booked especially to have the p*** taken out of them in a very overt fashion. Mark didn’t book people to rag on them, it was just in the flow of the show that people suddenly went a bit weird and Mark could turn on them.

“It became something else with Simon and started to get a bit wearing.”

However, Phill’s immediate future on the BBC 2 show seems assured after Amstell quit last year. Jupitus will be back for the latest series next month, which will feature guest hosts.

A bit harsh on Simon Amstell I thought.. but it does confirm 'Buzzcocks' will be back next month.

I used to really like Simon Amstell but I saw him in Vicar Street a few months ago and he was a smug wanker. I would watch him on TV still, but I've lost a bit of respect for him.

    Ugh go away Phil Jupitus!

If only Simon had stayed, we'd still have him and that tosser would be gone.

I missed this, anyone know of a repeat?

I thought the programme was a bit of a mixed bag. It had its moments I suppose...it was a bit slow-moving for my liking though.

I thought he was very funny on Buzzcocks. Jupitus is a big fat loser.

the show wasn't bad, a few good jokes and the interaction between all the characters was pretty good too

Also saw him in Vicar Street and was very unimpressed. I think he was more worried about getting footage for the dvd than actually doing a good stand-up show. As a big Amstell fan I would go see him again in the hope that it was just because it was the dvd recording that he was off.

I didn't think Grandma's House was spectacular but still enjoyed it so will keep watching.

Completely forgot to watch this. Hopefully there'll be a repeat.

The funniest parts of Buzzcocks was when he did take the p*ss out of the "celebrity" guests.

Haven't seen this yet but I did see Amstell perform in Kilkenny this year and he was excellent. Very assured delivery of top class material which was for the most part extremely self-deprecating. I didn't get an air of smugness off him at all.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,192 ✭✭✭norbert64

IMHO, Jupitus spoke the truth, especially for the latter seasons of Amstells tenure.

They might as well have just thrown out the whole quiz format, and renamed it,
''The Simon Amstell r*ps the p*ss out of (Insert Celebrity name here) show''

meh, even from his Popworld days, I never really liked him so I won't be tuning in to this new vehicle of his.

If Jupitus quit and Amstell stayed on, I wonder would anyone have noticed Jupitus was gone? He could be so easily replaced, he's just...there. Amstell gave the Buzzcocks a new lease of life when he showed up.

I actually agree, Noel Fielding and Simon Amstell was a good combination - I'm not sure I would have noticed Jupitus being absent

I watched most of it this evening and what I saw was promising. It reminded me of the Royle Family though which is in my mind not so great. I fell asleep towards the end but this was only through tiredness. Will watch the end of it later

Watched it at the weekend and I liked the way Amstell addressed the way that Buzzcocks had gone and pretty much agreed with what everyone was saying that it had become nasty.

Yeah, I quite enjoyed it too!

But Simon is a terrible little actor - not that it's particularly important in a show like this.

It's quite reminiscent of 'The Royle Family' (from the first episode anyways) in how all the majority of the action take place in a single house / room..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,159 ✭✭✭✭phasers

I thought it was really boring :(

I feel I should also add that I hated the Royle Family, I can't bear any show where the cast just sit around and talk about nothing.

I'll go along with that, could hardly keep a straight face.

Then again, Jerry Seinfeld had the same problem.

*Note* I am in no way, shape or form, likening "Grandma's House" to the mighty "Seinfeld" !

Simon - "Maybe I'll write something or do some acting."
Everyone else - "You can't act."

Yup he's not a great actor but at least he knows it. :)

Better tonight for me, Clive is really good. Scares the crap outta from from here!

Just saw the second episode, not too bad at all. I assumed it would be awful but I though it had some decent moments. Of course I'm on opiate filled painkillers so I might judge it more harshly next week.

I really thought NMTBC went terrible once Mark Lamarr left.

Can't say I agree.. Amstell was an absolute revelation and I despised him at the start!

As he admits himself, all he did was take the piss out of guests but he did it very well!

He probably did get better - I could never get over how bad he was at the beginning, so I just never went back.

You really should try and give some of it a watch.. I had the same opinion as you at the start!

You can pick up a 'Best Of' with just Simon Amstell's time as host.. I can't recommend it enough.

You can watch it on <SNIP>. Both episodes are split into 3 parts each.

MOD EDIT: RobertFoster banned for 7 days. You've been around here long enough to know you can't post links to copyrighted content (streaming or otherwise) on this forum.

It's a pretty good show, I like it. Rebecca Front is great as the mum (she was brilliant in The Day Today and Knowing Me, Knowing You I'm Alan Partridge too).

Amstell can't act for **** but that's easy enough to ignore.

And she was great in The Thick Of It too. Great actress and TTOI is a terribly underrated show.

Oi vey! Chicken soup ahoy. Not as good tonight but Rebecca Front keeps me smiling.
You can see Grandad (Geoffrey Hutchings) is not long for this world, I'm wondering if he made it to the end of the series.

Wasn't great tonight but there were some fantastic lines. "Just enough pussy?" :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 44,195 ✭✭✭✭Basq

There was a few cracking lines though..

Clive: "Who is this Ben Theodore? He's hardly Mel Gibson."
Grandma: "Sorry.. we don't say that name in this house!"

    .. and..

Adam: ""I didn't even have sex with her... just wanked into her pencil case!"

    :D

Good to see Simon from 'Misfits' in something else too!
