If I got a network locked iPhone and needed to activate prior to jailbreaking & unlocking does the sim I use in the iPhone while activating have to be a working sim or will any old sim do?

the sim has to be from the network that the phone is locked to.

I was wondering does the sim have to be live or can it be an old sim?

I was aware that to activate say a Vodafone phone, you'd have to use a Vodafone sim. However I don't know if the sim needs to be a live sim or can it be one that's switched off.
