Never heard of a baler available for self hire anywhere in the country to be honest, so I wouldn't be too optimistic if I were you. It isn't really the done thing with farm machinery. A minor mishap or one careless driver could cause an awful lot of damage.

ive definately seen an add recently for an irish company which said it hired out balers, i cant for the life of me remember where i saw it though..remember thinking it was strange because as casino says it might end badly for the rental company

Atkins had this advertised in Thursday's Journal. €1 per bale to rent a used baler.

There you go then. Problem solved. Although at €1 per bale it would probably work out cheaper to get a contractor to do it for you, you wouldn't be saving a whole lot when you add up your expenses.

Are they the machinery dealers in the journal who, what's the beat way to say it, wrote entertaining adverts? I know I seen one advertised somewhere just not sure if this was it or not.

Agreed, although I'd say Atkins are using this as a means to ease people into the idea of buying a second-hand baler.

You may call it entertaining, I'd personally call it a load of bull$hit

Would you not?? The going rate is about 7 or 8 euro per bale...so taking out diesel and your time you would save a bit!

Well now I didn't wish to be that harsh as I know f**k all about them, only seen the adds.

And at €8 a bale that includes plastic, wrapper two tractors diesel x2 etc.

They're always the first ad I look for in the classifieds, I reckon someone down there's a bit fond of something when they're writing up the ads.

I saw that a few weeks ago. a euro a bale rental, and that rental to be discounted off the price if you decided to buy.

If you were in the market for a second hand baler it looks like a good idea to me.

Rebel man you are you working in Atkins by any chance ;)

I read that they need €1000 deposit before you take out the baler, it's €1 a bale. How do they know how many bales you make? I would imagine that they have a set price per day.

As far as I know there is a counter that will tell you how many bales a baler has made, not 100% sure on that but I think that's the way it is.

Maybe on the newer balers but on the older welgers that Atkins are hiring out there is only one counter that can be reset.

€7 or €8 a euro a bale is to mow, bale and wrap. The rate for baling alone is anything from €3 to €4 per bale. If the baler is costing €1 per bale, net wrap will cost around 60c, diesel 30-40c, oil, grease etc another few pence and then your own time and use of your tractor. Throw in a €1000 deposit, which I would imagine is non-refundable if something breaks, and all of a sudden it doesn't sound a great deal to me!

Oh sorry heard it was 7 or 8 from another post..assumed it was just baling! Not really worth the hassle so :)

In fairness you would be doing well to get it for 7 or 8 euro mowing baling and wrapping where I am, ten is the going rate as far as im aware

We get about 34 bales to the roll so exactly €2

Was working out would save bout 2 euro a bale and with bout six hundred bales still to make thought was worth putting out there. Maybe should just buy secondhand one.......not very mechanicly minded tho when things go wrong so might not b the smartest idea!!!

I would imagine that any routine breakages would be covered by the dealer. But if you wrapped it round a tree somehow it would be up to you to pay for it. If you have the tractor to drive it and the time I reckon it's worth going for. But who do you get to wrap them??

What type of baler are you using? Either the bales are small, or you're skimping on the plastic

How you figure that??? Mchale F560 and a V660..Won't get much better than that ;). 16 revolutions of the HS200 gets 68 bales to the two rolls.. 44500 bales wrapped last year...No-one complained.I'm guessin your wasting plastic.

if your friendly with your local dealer just ask about a demo. Our baler's drive chain broke last year and usually we would have a spare but it takes a while to fit anyway so we got a demo welger from our dealer they just asked us to pay for the net we used off the roll. Personnaly id like to know a few things about the baler before i rented it we didnt know much about this one and they told us that it was set at the highest density but me thinks that either they didnt have a clue or they were saving the baler or the baler just makes crap bales!!! But they did tell us that if you drive faster it will pack more in so me thinks the first option might be right

Good balers alright. We had a V660 out on demo last year - pure animal. I'm puzzled now cos we use an F560 and 991BER wrapper and we're just about getting 30 bales per roll. Now we do put 17 laps of plastic but that wouldn't account for a difference of 4 bales so I don't know whats going on there

we own a krone 130 ourselves twine only so its a bit slower opening but it makes even straw bales as hard as concrete and weigh about the same too :D.
We got a fella who used to work for farmhand out over the winter fixing a few things we had problems with bearings and chains but he fitted washers on all the bearings to stop material getting in around them and adjusted the chains alls going well so far touch wood.
The bales of barley straw we made this year we were pushing them of the trailer instead of bringing the loader back to the yard every load and you could only get the top of your thumb into the bale we only had to take 2 of the contractors bales and you could pull the centre of them clean out practically
