iPhone without contract

    This may be a stupid question but;

    I'm wondering can the iphone be used without a contract. 3G coverage is crap where I live (and in much of the county) but I have wifi in work and at home so its no big deal. I'm in contract for another year anyway so can't do anything at the moment but I'm wondering, when my contract is up could I just go back to pay as you go for phonecalls, and only use the iphone on wifi. It wouldn't make much difference to me except I would save a few quid.
