Help me with my MX5

    :o

This is a bit of a crosspost but anywho...

The car is a mk2 1.6 with 80k on the clock.

When I start the car, it turns over and starts for a split second before cutting out. Trying the 2nd time gets the car started with no problems. Any ideas on what could be causing it? It doesn't struggle on the first go, it just won't start. Heard a few ideas so far regarding various sensors (oxygen and mass air flow). As I said, once it starts at the 2nd key turn it's running perfectly, doesn't matter if the engine is hot or cold.

Might be worth mentioning that it did die on me a few months ago which resulted in the replacement of ECU and coil pack and it does tend to vary it's idling speed a bit.

My next step is to call the garage that originally got it started for me, as the problem has been happening since then (they said it'd be fine after a fuel clearout and new battery) but if you've any ideas, send them my way!

    Thanks in advance!

When you mention it vaies its idle speed, perhaps a simple voltage check on the coolant temperature sensor would be a way to go. Compare the results with manufacturers specs. This sensor provides the primary input to the ECU for fuel injector pulse width from cold/at idle.
Second to tat, check throttle body for any carbon/muck deposits and clean out with carb cleaner if dirty.
Im assuming all service items are in check; air filter, correctly gapped plugs, decent fuel filter?
Also check for vacuum leaks by spraying WD40 around all oses and noting any riuse in engine revs as you go.
    Should keep you busy.

    MK2 MX = B6 engine?

I worked on an old B6T for a guy a few years back and had similar problem.
Turned out to be broken springs holding the inertial weights inside the disty.

Have a look at this site for info... I'm just guessing there might be a similar setup on your mx5:

The springs & weights came in a kit and the part number I used at the time was as per the site B660-18-V11

    Best of luck,
