Auction by Ganly Graigue on behalf of revenue Sheriff in Toughers business park next saturday.

2100 lots of furniture (they must have had a huge tax bill)

Whilst I have an idea of the company it has come from (high quality) it is not mentioned, so I won't do so either.

    http://www.gc2000.ie/dynamic.php?lang=&id_menu=113

From What I see, it is a straight auction, prices will include vat but a 5% auctioneers premium is added. - So if an item is sold at €100, you pay €105.

Yeah but if you want to buy anything you'll need a catalogue.

Because I'm not certain and I know the company I am thinking of has not gone into liquidation. So any mention of it without being 100% certain could seen as defamation.

Once I see the signs and if the signs are on the premises I think it is in, I'll mention it.

Viewing is Friday - so anyone can drop by and check out whether the stuff is top notch as I suspect or crap.

Auction is on saturday in 3 different warehouses (there are 2100 lots to be cleared). As its a Revenue Sheriff auction, stuff will be sold there and then so potential for mega bargains is there.

Knowing a little about how the revenue work (friend used to work in investigations dept) if the stuff was crap they would offload it through the trade.

Looking at the few photos on the advert, its at the higher end of the quality spectrum.

As I work in Toughers I'll drop over on Friday morning and post a quick report on quality

Auction is in Jondol Furniture Showrooms & warehouses.

If anyone knows Jondol Furniture they'll know they are at the higher end of the market, so expect solid wood tables / chairs / beds.
    High end suites etc.

By my reckoning, there will be approx one item sold each minute of the day - so it will be fast & furious and the auctioneer will want to get rid rather than wait 5 minutes for a higher bid.

Is Jondol the company that has gone bust? From my experience with them, Jondol still live in the Celtic Tiger era with their sky high prices for furniture that is not the best quality. I was looking for a large tv cabinet to house my av gear and upon close inspection, their furniture was cheap flat packed rubbish badly put together but with very large price tags.

The company you mention has not gone bust - at least there is nothing in CRO records to suggest that.

The auction is being held in the former Jondol Furniture premises in Toughers.

The revenue sherrif can seize goods and auction them off so that the proceeds can be offset against a tax bill. These days they are particularly expedient in these matters and even if you're 3 month over due they are known to have taken this form of action and as some companies are way overstocked, which causes cashflow problems, it is sometimes the lesser of 2 evils to allow for stock to be taken in lieu and auctioned off.

As for the comment on furniture - virtually all furniture (even the top end of market) that comes from abroad comes into Ireland flatpacked and is assembled locally.

    Report

The Auction is located in what was a large empty warehouse. Within the warehouse there are 4 areas marked 1,2,3,4.

Much of the furniture is from Jondol Furniture as their labels are still on stuff, but it is possible that other stuff is there too.

Primarily it is more traditional style furniture, mahogony / rosewood style with high gloss finish.

Some dark weathered style units too.

A lot of wardrobes & hall tables. Not a huge amount of beds. Abut 30 leather suites, a lot of chairs, a goof few oak dining tables & sideboards.

Everythig seems to be good quality, mostly solid wood construction. Leather suites have excellent leather. (I know a bit about leather:D)

Overall I'd say more traditional design than design led. Would ceratinly suit those in older houses more than those looking for ultra modern.

Viewing is today - you must buy catalogue for €5.

edit - some stuff is obviously stuff that has sat at back of warehouse for a few years.

Just wondering do you think they will let you take pictures of the stuff today.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 627 ✭✭✭rossc007

Just got back, there really is loads of good quality stuff there. Plenty of tables, wardrobes and leather suites.

There was one fabric sofa that I saw, wasnt great.

    Took a few pics.

:DThanks for that. My partner is on the way down now.
    I can't get off work.
He is going to take pics and I will tell him if he is allowed to bid for them tomorrow:D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 390 ✭✭Dec4

Bargains will be few and far between down there tomorrow judging from the crowds looking and queueing for paddles. Where's that recession?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,632 ✭✭✭✭okidoki987

So it's basically a €5 entry fee whether you buy anything or not.
I know 1 person who won't be there.

€5 just to get in to see the items for sale. A bit of a let down really. Some nice stuff but a lot are damaged in some way. A little disappointing. There is a €200 deposit required to get a bidding number. Don't think I'll bother heading there tomorrow. Not worth all the hype. :(

No real auctions in Ireland until now, including this.
Just a spin to get rid of stock.
Good luck with those who bid.

Doubt there will be too many bargains to be had

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,284 ✭✭✭wyndham

A lot of the stuff is shop-soiled, with scratches, stains, etc here and there. Far from new.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,632 ✭✭✭✭okidoki987

leather reclining chairs which retail at up to €1,500 each

Who in their right mind would pay 1,500 for a leather reclining chair?
Sounds more like trying to bump the prices paid up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,632 ✭✭✭✭okidoki987

Was on the 6 o'clock news.
They said it was a lot of furniture stores.
Anybody post up prices/quality of goods etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 878 ✭✭✭Bicky

I went up today and was very disappointed. There was a very large crowd due to all the hype and people way overbid on items. I had an eye on a few things i didn't really need but would have taken for a bargain but the price went far too high in all cases.
The quality of the furniture was pretty good but they were mostly shop soiled, as wyndham said.

Bought two bedside lockers there today for 350euro that the misses wanted to buy in Harvey Norman for 780euro every time we went in there so I'm dead happy!:)

This sums up why the country is in such a mess, €350 for bedside lockers.

I reckon no need to put a downer on like that; its nice to pick up a bargain on something you actually wanted - as it ain't a bargain otherwise :p

I just couldn't have handled the mosh down there even though I saw a few things I would have liked - especially the wicker furniture that I have seen in a few pic's; would be nice in the conservatory (which we never use) :D

It's amazing what happens to people at auctions who are not familiar with them.

There was a massive car auction a few months ago, again liquidated stock, and people paid way way over the odds for cars there because they got caught up in it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,675 ✭✭✭exaisle

Bargains were few and far between, but if you spent a bit of time on Friday identifying items you needed (as opposed to stuff you'd buy on a whim because you thought it was a good deal) then it was possible to spot the odd saving.

A hour on the interweb on Friday night would pay dividends although it was obvious that not many had done so.

There were several instances of bidders actually paying over the average retail price of lots. More money than sense I reckon. If [people only knew how much this stuff originally cost......

    +1 BigCon!

And Irish government makes sure by borrowing more and more. Keep people happy by giving them delusion of grandiose and stay in power.

Was there and had intened bidding on up to 8 items (if first choice was overbid, went on to second choice etc)

Every item I marked went for twice / 3 times what I was prepared to pay. - even a filthy dirty half moon shaped seat went for €300 when the full retail price was probably less.

Strange thing was some high priced items such as solid mahogony bedside lockers went for about €300 / €400 per pair, (excellent value) whilst similar products made from mexican pine or other cheaper material went for about the same price. (similar to standard retail price)

    - the reclining chairs that had a rrp for €1500 was a superb piece of furniture and a bargain for the 3 people who bought at 400 -450.

Anyone up for buying a few container loads of mixed ex catalogue / department store returns furniture and doing the same thing???:D
