painting a rusty satellite dish

Hi every1, my sky satellite dish is getting a bit rusty, and I want to paint it.

I was wondering what paint I should use.

There are a few rust primer products like this and this, that are grey and matt, and are ok to paint directly onto rust.

Would either of these be ok, or does someone know of another/better option?

You should get a new dish! If you just paint over rust it won't be long going rusty again.

hmmm, the dish is only a year old, and not badly rusted, just around the screws, and I was hoping just to do some preventive maintainance.

If you live near the coast and its a standard mesh sky dish thats been put up you might be better off replacing it with an aluminium dish. The sky mesh dishes are very prone to rust. But if you do decide to paint the one you have any type of rust proofing paint will do!

I use Triflow bbq spraypaint matt on all dishes around coastal areas i call to.

I'm not actually near the coast, but I'll look into the trifllow, cheers all.

Wirebrush and two coats of brushed smooth hammerite both sides and it will last a very long time. Spraying has to be 2 or 3 coats or it has a lot of pin-prick holes.

Treat the rust first, krust does just the job in 15 minutes. Halfords sell a 250ml bottle for €11. Link. Once it sets use 2 coats of anti rust primer and finish with your favourite colour . Clearcoat for a glossy shine optional .

yes, don't use White or Silver.

Don't use bright gloss as twice a year the reflected sunlight would cook the LNB.

Twice a year - you lucky bugger!! I live out Wesht and we rarely see the sun once per year!

It's based on the fact that a picture of a dish isn't as good as a real one:D

@Watty-I saw 2 dishes in Oylegate village painted with silver gloss paint,dunno how the lnb's have lasted,pure luck I'd say.

Darker colours are better absorbers of heat. That would explain why they are mostly painted black. Although I have seen them painted white. What's the deal with these anyone know?

Seems like the heat generated by a zone 2 mesh dish wouldn't be very much.

Interesting link there. They do say the metallic paint (i.e. hammerite) can interfere with attenuation, but unless your painting on more than 3mm it won't interfere with the signal quality. A spray might give better results.

If you look at them again you will see rust appearing again.
As i said in my previous post use Triflow BBQ matt spray paint on rusty dishes i do on dishes i work at along the coast.

Only if it's Stealth Bomber paint.

Regular paint is transparent to Microwave.
Smooth Metallic paint with less than 1mm roughness acts as new reflective surface (Microwaves don't need as much smoothness as a mirror for light).

Only Microwave adsorbing paint used to fool Radar will make your dish stop working. If you find that in the local Hardware store the Military will be interested.
