Barwork- How?

Essentially, I've failed to secure any work in retail etc, usual places, so I've decided trying bars/clubs etc would be a good idea. I've handed a few CV's in however have heard nothing back from anywhere.

I think whats working against me is I've never worked for anyone at all ever, particularly I've no bar experience it seems unlikely someone would take me on. Aside from my school work experience, I worked freelance and wrote several articles for a few magazines and was paid for it, and I worked as a DJ myself. Both of those have dried up, however I've put them on my CV in thinking it'd work to my advantage. Sadly it has not. Never worked anywhere else.

Should probably mention I'm going on 19 just finished the Leaving cert and starting college.

    Any advice?

The best way to get into Bar work with no experiance is to start off as cloakroom, promo, glass collecting staff...Then after a while ask to get trained into the bar. Thats how most people do it!

    As above

You won't be put in straight behind the bar.
Well you might but it's not ideal

Start in the cloakroom or glass collector and you can get a go behind the bar after a month or two on quiet nights.

It's good to have, handy for a job in college or whenever.

As the above posters have said, move the way up. Did you check with hotels too? I know when I was younger (many moons ago), I started work as a porter (fancy word for collecting glasses) and gradually moved up to getting trained behind the bar. Hospitality seems to have a fairly high turnover rate, so once you show some interest, you ought to get trained up at some stage.

In Cork, there's a tourism course which specifically does bar training. It's on Albert road down here, they've a replica pub and everything. Think you get paid while you're training too. Maybe there's something similar locally?

I did a course with CERT, kinda like FAS but for tourism in 2004

Did it in Limerick, it realy was excellent.
Courses for barstaff, restuarant work and chefs. They have a fantastic setup in Limerick.

Most people were on the dole and upskilling. I wasn't entitled to the dole being in full time education but did it anyway, it was brilliant.

I don't think CERT exists anymore, I think Failte Ireland has taken it over.

If you're in Limerick it's across from Roxboro shopping centre.
You can stop off in the infamous Steering Wheel bar for a drink too, be careful :pac:

When I was 18 i worked as a glass collector (floorstaff) in a bar / nightclub. The other dozen glasscollectors all wanted to work behind the bar too. In the end, the girls who flirted most with the manager got the bar worker jobs.

i've worked in nightclubs, pubs hotels for 11 years now... My advise avoid it if possible, Its not all its cracked up to be .. well for clubs anyway. i started in clubs when i was 17.. very messy .. lots of abuse not to mention the horrible things you see/clean..

My advice, as posted above look in hotels as a porter and work your way up.. alot easier then in a club or pub.. at least you'll be trained as barstaff and go from there.. Any other questionS buddy drop me a PM..
