I guess this applies to all phones and not just the iphone but can anyone advise me how secure or not this is. For example i was in a restaurant last week and it had wifi available and i could connect automatically. Is this secure at all - if you were checking some bank stuff could you passwords etc be easily taken. I don't know much at all about this so any advise would be greatly appreciated. Is it even safe to surf ordinary sites i.e. not requiring any passwords bank, email etc or could someone get access to your phone this way?

Wireless is everywhere, now, and there are so many devices that access it, but I've never heard of a single instance of somebody being 'violated' in this way.

Don't know if it's possible -but it's certainly improbable.

Ya i was half thinking that but just wasn't sure. I guess anything is possible in theory but i was just wondering is it reasonably safe to just jump on to open networks you find around the place

    Cheers

Lots of restaurants provide free wifi, It is very possible and easily achievable to steal information, therefore it is not recommended to surf bank sites etc from the untrusted connection.
Normal sites should be alight and apple has some kind of security built in for mail apps etc but why take a chance when mostly providers provide reasonable data bundle.
The only time i have used public wi-fi is to install app over 20 Mb, to give you idea how secure it is we used to play around in college on Linux laptop and with a bit of knowledge and effort we were able to see what sites other people are browsing on their phones and laptop etc.
    So avoid.
